Title: Enterprise Architect
Target Start Date: ASAP
Type: Direct-Hire
Salary: DOE
This is a well-established, financially stable organization with a large and mature internal development practice, meaning you will be joining a team that takes engineering seriously and has the infrastructure to support it. The architecture function here is not an afterthought — it is a respected discipline with real influence over how technology decisions get made across the enterprise. As the senior-most architect in the application domain, you will have the authority and visibility to shape reference architectures, set technical standards, and build the kind of lasting frameworks that engineers actually rely on. The company operates at significant scale within the insurance industry, which means your work will have complexity, consequence, and broad organizational reach. If you are the type of architect who wants to be credible with engineers and impactful with leadership, this role offers both.
This position serves as the senior-most application architect in the organization, with broad responsibility for defining reference architectures, setting technical standards, and maintaining technology roadmaps across a diverse portfolio of custom-built, packaged, and cloud-delivered systems. The right candidate will be equally comfortable driving strategic direction with engineering leadership and rolling up their sleeves to provide sample code, reusable packages, or hands-on guidance that accelerates development teams. The role requires strong experience in regulated industries such as insurance, finance, banking, or healthcare, and familiarity with both modern frameworks like Angular and Microsoft .NET and enterprise application patterns is essential. A critical part of success in this position is the ability to build genuine partnerships with engineers, architects, and business stakeholders — this organization values architects who are seen as trusted collaborators rather than gatekeepers. Experience with P&C insurance platforms such as Guidewire is a meaningful differentiator for candidates.
Responsibilities
- Define and maintain application architecture standards, reference architectures, and technology strategy across custom, COTS, and SaaS platforms in alignment with cloud objectives and enterprise goals
- Develop and govern reusable frameworks, sample code, and shared packages that enable development teams to build faster and more consistently
- Collaborate with platform and developer experience teams to champion modern tooling, frameworks, and environments that support cloud-native application development and deployment
- Partner with solution architects, principal engineers, and software teams to ensure architectural consistency and design integrity across all initiatives
- Advise engineering leadership on innovation opportunities, modernization approaches, and risk management, with attention to application lifecycle, technical debt, and compliance requirements
- Develop and maintain an application technology roadmap, prioritizing tech debt remediation and platform health improvements in coordination with solution architects
- Lead architecture reviews and governance processes for major initiatives, ensuring adherence to performance, resiliency, security, and integration standards as well as non-functional requirements
- Mentor architects, software engineers, and delivery professionals, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement
- Conduct technical risk assessments within the application domain and recommend mitigation strategies focused on operational risk, interoperability, and debt reduction
- Serve as the subject matter expert on application architecture, enabling both IT and business teams to deliver capabilities on secure cloud and hybrid platforms
- Champion API-first, event-driven, and domain-driven design principles along with modular architecture standards to support long-term maintainability across all application types
Required Skills - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- 10 or more years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in application architecture leadership within a regulated industry such as insurance, finance, banking, or healthcare
- Proven experience as a senior or lead application architect with demonstrated ownership of reference architectures, technical standards, and technology roadmaps
- Strong hands-on technical knowledge of Angular and Microsoft .NET, including the ability to produce sample code and reusable packages that guide engineering teams
- Experience with both custom-developed applications and packaged or cloud-delivered systems, including COTS and SaaS solutions
- Deep understanding of enterprise and solution architecture as it applies to insurance systems including policy management, claims, underwriting, and customer portals
- Expertise in distributed systems design, cloud platforms, microservices, and event-driven architecture
- Proven ability to identify, prioritize, and manage technical debt systematically across a large application portfolio
- Knowledge of security, compliance, and regulatory requirements specific to software in regulated industries
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with a demonstrated track record of being viewed as a collaborative, value-added partner by engineering and business stakeholders
Bonus / Soft Skills - Experience with P&C insurance platforms such as Guidewire or similar policy and claims management systems
- Familiarity with TOGAF or similar enterprise architecture frameworks
- Experience working in hybrid cloud environments alongside legacy modernization programs
- Demonstrated ability to build consensus and drive alignment across cross-functional teams
- Track record of developing and mentoring architectural and engineering talent
- Comfort operating in a governance capacity while remaining hands-on and technically credible with engineering leads
- Experience creating and maintaining technology roadmaps that balance innovation with pragmatic delivery
