Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and delivers lessons to promote students’ English language development.

  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and specialists to ensure achievement of EL/MLs across content areas through the Sheltered Instruction and the English Language Development program models.

  • Administers formative and summative assessments to monitor language progress and ensure student achievement.

  • Completes documentation required for compliance with state and federal guidelines.

  • Completes daily logs of student services.

  • Attends regular Professional Development offerings.

  • Be available for afternoon and evening parent-teacher conferences and school events.

  • Additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • For MI only: Candidates for English Language (EL) Teacher positions should preferably hold a valid teaching license for the grades they will serve (K-8 or 6-12) and an English as a Second Language (NS) or a Bilingual endorsement. Minimally, candidates for this position must be on an approved pathway towards gaining licensure for the grades they serve (K-8 or 6-12) within three years and then obtain an NS or YA-YT endorsement within 2 years of certification.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of first and second language acquisition theory, second language learning patterns, and best practices in English language development.

  • Reflects an awareness and acceptance of cultural differences exhibited by the students and their families.

  • Possesses those characteristics necessary for acting as an advocate for multilingual families within the school.

  • Read, analyze, and interpret student academic data.

  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate with classroom teachers, administration, and families.
