EMS Training Coordinator

This position is responsible for the coordination of EMS training.

P1 - P5 - DOE

Associate’s degree in a course of study directly related to the occupational field. Post-secondary education or experience which provides the expertise required to effectively perform the functions of the position may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.


Five years of experience in the occupational field providing ACLS level emergency care, sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, including one year of supervisory experience is preferred. Relevant experience includes: Paramedic experience; EMS or other medical instruction; administration or management experience; curriculum development; simulation training and operation; data management and tracking.


Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Please note: Employees assigned driving duties/responsibilities,must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience.


Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid National Registry & State of AK Paramedic licensure within six months of hire.


Alaska State EMT Instructor certifications (State of Alaska Basic and Advance EMS Instructor Certifications) required at the time of hire or must be obtained within one year of hire.


AHA (American Heart Association) and NAEMT (National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians) Instructor certifications required at the time of hire or must be obtained within one year of hire.


Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen and physical.

Completion of Incident Command System (ICS) courses, ICS 100 and IS 700 within ninety (90) days of hire and ICS 200 and IS 800 within one (1) year of hire.

  • Evaluates information from numerous, diverse sources to assess the proficiency of EMS responders.
  • Creates tools to measure medic performance and interprets performance results.
  • Plans and implements training and instruction in EMS principles.
  • Assigns training tasks to instructors.
  • Provides training courses in a variety of EMS disciplines.
  • Disseminates information regarding training opportunities.
  • Creates instructional programs and materials for use by instructors and line staff.
  • Coordinates training opportunities with external providers.
  • Facilitates the credentialing of EMS providers; remains informed of changes in licensing procedures.
  • Responds to incidents and accidents and provides emergency medical care as needed.
  • If trained as a Certifying Officer, may act as such for state approved practical examinations and on-line written examinations.
  • Coordinates the scheduling and activities of on call EMS instructors.
  • Operates simulation manikins and related equipment.
  • Maintains operational proficiency and may be called upon for operational activities at the discretion of the Deputy Director – EMS.
  • When staffing the EOC performs the functions assigned by the Event Commander to efficiently and effectively respond and manage an incident.
  • Performs related duties.
