Emergency Services - Lab Instructor (Adjunct Faculty)

This is an adjunct faculty pool for teaching part-time in the Emergency Services department. This pool will remain open until June 2026 unless positions are no longer needed. If at any time you decide that you are no longer interested, you may log in to the system and withdraw your application from the pool. Lab Instructors are primarily responsible for teaching and evaluating EMT and Paramedic students in the practical application of EMS skills and knowledge in a classroom and lab setting. Scenario-based training using manikins and simulated patients and emergency scenes is widely used. Lab Instructors work primarily with small groups of students (4-8), with oversight and guidance provided by the Course Director.

Supervision Received

The dean, in consultation with the department chair is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the vice president. The dean confers with the department chair in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.

1. Instructs students in a classroom, lab, learning center, or other setting as appropriate.
2. Arrives early for labs and assists in the setup and preparation of lab stations and scenarios.
3. Assists in the cleanup and restocking of lab equipment and supplies.
4. Evaluates students' performance in stations designed to mirror the skills performance tests used for certification.
5. Acts as a proctor and/or role-player for simulated emergency scenarios.
6. Completes written Lab Evaluation Rubrics to provide performance feedback to students, the Course Director, and Department Chair, when appropriate.
7. Drives the RCC ambulance as needed for emergency scenarios.
8. Supervises the driving and operation of the ambulance by students.
9. Represents the program and the College to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner.
10. Provides direct supervision and evaluation of student in the EMS Lab. Example of activities to be supervised:
a. Use of needles and placement of intravenous devices
b. Handling hazardous materials
c. Proper lifting and moving of gurneys to/from ambulance and lab
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Oregon State licensure at or above the EMT level being taught is required.

AAS Paramedicine degree; Bachelor's degree; Fire Instructor I certification or equivalent; Instructor certifications in CPR, ACLS, PALS, PEPP, PHTLS, and similar courses; and/or Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor training desirable.

Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Experience: Three years of EMS experience and one year of EMS experience at or above the level being taught required.

Greater than three years of EMS field experience at or above the level being taught and prior relevant teaching experience desired.

Knowledge of: EMS systems and application of EMT and Paramedic skills in emergency and non-emergency settings.

Ability to: Communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues and students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; work collaboratively as a member of an academic department; demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching in the subject area; participate in program development and improvement; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the classroom and related educational duties; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth. Pass a criminal background check.

Licenses: Oregon State licensure at or above the EMT level being taught.

Must possess a valid Oregon Driver License and provide proof of an acceptable driving record.

Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period (about 60%). While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 35 pounds on a regular basis. On feet 90% of time. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while utilizing equipment. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a lab/classroom environment or doing outdoor lab exercises on/around campus in the ambulance, and is potentially exposed to body fluids, pathogens, and hazardous materials. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most lab/classroom environments with potentially loud equipment, frequent interruptions, and background noises. Lighting is adequate.
