Job Description

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist establishes, implements, and sustains site-level safety and environmental programs that ensure regulatory compliance, reduce operational risk, and promote a strong safety culture. This role serves as a primary resource for EHS guidance, partnering closely with employees and leaders to interpret regulations, improve workplace conditions, and support continuous improvement in safety and environmental performance.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and sustain site-level safety and environmental practices that support operational compliance and risk reduction.
  • Serve as a go-to resource for safety and environmental guidance, providing practical interpretation of regulations and direction to employees and leaders.
  • Perform routine and targeted evaluations of workplace conditions to identify exposure or risk areas and drive timely corrective actions.
  • Coordinate and maintain OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) and ISO-related programs, including internal audits, documentation, and ongoing compliance activities.
  • Support fact-finding and follow-up activities related to incidents, injuries, and near misses, including documentation, root cause analysis, and improvement tracking.
  • Maintain chemical-related records and digital documentation systems to support material awareness and safe handling practices.
  • Assist with workplace injury administration processes, including reporting, documentation, and maintenance of required logs.
  • Support structured safety and environmental management systems through internal reviews, readiness activities, and record upkeep.
  • Create and deliver safety-focused onboarding and refresher training sessions for employees and third-party personnel.
  • Coordinate site emergency preparedness and response efforts, including recurring emergency response training in partnership with outside service providers.
  • Oversee exposure evaluation activities tied to workplace conditions, including monitoring programs and protective equipment protocols.
  • Maintain organized safety documentation, training records, and contractor compliance files to support audits and regulatory reviews.
  • Administer personal protective equipment (PPE) processes, including specialty equipment management and controlled distribution systems.
  • Assist with site sustainability initiatives through tracking, documentation, and coordination with service partners.
  • Compile and present safety and environmental performance updates using visual dashboards and summary-based reporting tools.
  • Participate in reviews and assessments that support continuous improvement and the ongoing maturity of safety and environmental programs.

Essential Skills

  • 4–8+ years of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) experience supporting safety and environmental programs within an operational, production, or compliance-driven setting.
  • At least 2+ years of recent EHS experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and requirements.
  • Strong working knowledge of EPA regulations and applicable state environmental and safety regulations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with compliance activities, including reporting, audits, and documentation.
  • Experience delivering safety training and communicating EHS requirements to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to evaluate workplace conditions, identify hazards, and recommend effective corrective actions.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate safety and environmental records and digital documentation systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating or supporting OSHA VPP and ISO-based safety or environmental management programs.
  • Experience in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action tracking.
  • Familiarity with chemical management systems and safe handling practices.
  • Experience compiling and presenting EHS performance metrics using visual reporting tools or dashboards.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with employees, leaders, contractors, and external service providers.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond flexibly to urgent safety or regulatory needs.

Work Environment

This position is based fully on-site and supports a production or manufacturing environment. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with an expectation of on-site presence during core production hours. The role requires flexibility to support off-shift activities such as training, audits, and incident response, as well as occasional early or late hours tied to investigations, emergencies, or regulatory requirements. The work involves regular interaction on the production floor and in office settings, frequent coordination with operations and external service providers, and the use of digital systems for documentation, reporting, and recordkeeping.

This is a Permanent position based out of Michigan City, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $70000.00 - $90000.00/yr.
