Job Title: EHS Specialist (Contract)
Location: Danville, VA
Hourly: $35-$40
Duration: Approximately 1.5 months (aligned with active construction phase)
Schedule: Full-time (may include early mornings, extended hours, or weekends based on construction activity)
Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Temporary EHS Specialist to support on-site Environmental, Health & Safety efforts during an active construction project. This is a great opportunity for a safety professional who thrives in a fast-paced, field-based environment and enjoys working closely with contractors to ensure a safe and compliant job site.
In this role, you will serve as a visible safety presence, helping drive safe work practices, ensuring compliance, and proactively identifying risks. You will work alongside the Site EHS Manager to support day-to-day safety operations during this critical project phase.
What You’ll Be Doing
On-Site Safety & Contractor Oversight
- Maintain a consistent on-site presence to support construction safety activities
- Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures
- Intervene and stop work when unsafe conditions or behaviors are observed
- Ensure all work is performed within approved scope, permits, and risk controls
Permits, Risk Assessments & Safe Work Practices
- Review and verify daily work permits (hot work, confined space, work at height, LOTO, etc.)
- Participate in job hazard analyses and risk assessments
- Ensure critical safety controls are in place before and during work execution
- Support and verify behavior-based safety observations (BOS)
Safety Communication & Engagement
- Lead or support daily toolbox talks and pre-task safety briefings
- Reinforce safe behaviors and communicate key risks and lessons learned
- Act as a go-to safety resource for contractors and site personnel
PPE & Equipment Compliance
- Conduct inspections of PPE, tools, ladders, and temporary access equipment
- Identify and address safety concerns or deficiencies
- Ensure corrective actions are completed in a timely manner
Incident Prevention & Reporting
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, near misses, and potential hazards
- Support incident investigations and documentation
- Communicate safety trends and concerns to site leadership
What You Bring
Required Qualifications
- Experience supporting EHS activities in construction, manufacturing, or industrial environments
- Working knowledge of:
- Hazard identification and risk assessment
- Permit-to-work systems
- Contractor safety management
- Strong communication skills with the ability to confidently engage contractors and supervisors
- A proactive, detail-oriented approach with strong field presence
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 (Construction preferred)
- Experience working in active construction or manufacturing sites
- Familiarity with hot work, work at height, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
