Educator (Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center)

The Educator works in the Recreation Department and throughout EBR Parish at BREC parks and at community events. This requires scheduling educational and recreational programs, supervising staff and volunteers, leading and instructing programs, researching and developing curriculum and schedules, teaching and leading group activities, and composing routine correspondence. Work involves interaction with other employees, volunteers, community leaders, and the general public.

Education Required: Successful completion of 2 or more years at an accredited 4-year college or university
Preferred: Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university

Area of Study (major) Required: Rec Admin, Therapeutic Recreation, Sports Admin, Outdoor Programming, Education, or related field
Preferred: Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, social services, or related field.

Certification(s) Required: First Aid & CPR/AED Certification within 30 days of hire
Preferred: CPR and First Aid; CTRS or ADC for Therapeutic Recreation Assignment

License(s) Required: Valid LA driver’s license. Will need to obtain Class D chauffer’s license within 60 days of employment.
Preferred: Class D Chauffeur’s License

Years Relevant Work Experience: 2 years supervisory or recreation programming experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Preferred: 3 or more years supervisory and recreational programming experience

  • Written & oral communication skills for public programming
  • Interpersonal/public relations skills
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to quickly learn BREC policies and procedures
  • Ability to supervise and actively participate with 10-15 active children
  • Ability to work with participants, staff, and general public
  • Ability to adapt activities for children with disabilities so that inclusion (interaction with children with and without disabilities can participate together) can occur is preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends for programs or events

BBS
  • Researches, schedules and implements Education programs
  • Assists with the direct supervision of Summer Camps and seasonal camp employees and volunteers.
  • Prepares and disseminates correspondence about education programs to all area schools, including programs offered and confirmations.
  • Assists in website development.
  • Assists in development and maintenance of exhibit graphics
  • Handles education animals.
  • Assists with direction and training of volunteers.
Conservation
  • Researches, develops and implements Education programs
  • Assists with the direct supervision of Summer Camps, seasonal camp employees, part-time program staff, and volunteers (including counselors-in-training)
  • Prepares and assists in scheduling and executing parish-wide programming and outreach.
  • Assists in development and maintenance of exhibit graphics
  • Handles education animals
  • Assists with direction and training of volunteers (including counselors-in-training)
  • Assists with grounds/trail maintenance at times
  • Develops programs and activities for summer and holiday camps
Therapeutic
  • Researches, schedules and implements Therapeutic Recreation Programs for persons with developmental & mental disabilities.
  • Assists with the direct supervision of Sunshine Club, Adult Interactive Days, & Sunshine Socials.
  • Prepares and disseminates correspondence about therapeutic programs to all area schools, including programs offered and confirmations.
  • Assists with direction and training of volunteers.
