Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

How you will make an impact:

The incumbent of this position serves as an Educational Diagnostician and has no classroom responsibility. This position is involved in determining a student's qualification for enrollment in the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (School). Responsible for providing a full range of educational diagnostic services to current students, enrolling students and other student re-evaluations.

• Provides a full range of educational diagnostic services to deaf/hard of hearing, and teams with educational diagnostician of visually impaired for dual sensory impaired students for enrollment into the School. Reviews files and other reports of students to determine need for additional evaluation. Plans evaluations for students based on individual needs. Conducts diagnostic/educational evaluations. Interprets and discusses evaluation results with parents, staff, LEA representatives, and makes recommendations concerning eligibility and educational planning. Prepares reports of evaluations used to support team findings and recommendations. Participates in enrollment meetings and IEP development and review meetings. Conducts independent/outreach evaluations as directed.
• Provides a full range of diagnostic/educational services to students in the School. Participates in Interdisciplinary Team meetings to determine the needs of students. Performs additional educational/diagnostic evaluations as needed, interprets data and makes appropriate recommendations. Provides consultation for professionals and paraprofessionals in the areas of assessment and evaluation. Provides educational consulting to specific students as needed.
• Provides additional professional services. Maintains and organizes assessment materials and professional library. Participate in school committees, departmental and group meetings to share information and plan.
• Contributes to professional delivery system through participation in research, committee work, attendance at professional meetings, and providing direction/guidance for interns as assigned. Assist personnel with updating and maintaining information on Dual Sensory Impaired students.
• Attend training and implement skills acquired during professional development activities as required by Federal, State and FSDB mandates.
• Perform other additional duties as requested.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Broad knowledge of educational strategies for students who are deaf/hard of hearing or dual sensory impaired;
• Knowledge of educational evaluation instruments appropriate for, or standardized on, deaf/hard of hearing students;
• Knowledge of diagnostic methods used in determining learning disorders of students;
• Knowledge of the characteristics and learning styles of students who are identified as Intellectually Disabled, Specific Learning Disabled, Emotionally Handicapped, Physically Impaired, Speech/Language Impaired, and those requiring Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy;
• Knowledge of curriculum, federal and state mandates for students who are deaf/hard of hearing;
• Knowledge of Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary Team dynamics;
• Knowledge of developmental expectations for level of Departmental assignment; Skill to perform educational diagnostic evaluations;
• Ability to communicate with deaf/hard of hearing adults and students;
• Ability to interpret educational diagnostic evaluations;
• Ability to transfer evaluation data into an appropriate IEP;
• Ability to learn to communicate with the dual sensory impaired by use of signing skills and finger spelling during the performance of duties and responsibilities;
• Ability to function effectively on a team;
• Ability to pass training and administer skills acquired during CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI);
• Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in related field.
• Current state of Florida educator certification in deaf or hard of hearing K-12, or ability to obtain within a reasonable period of time upon hire.

If certification noted above is not from Florida, upon appointment, shall obtain state of Florida certification within a reasonable period of time.

• Twelve credit hours of college coursework in assessment.

• Three years professional teaching experience with students who are deaf/hard of hearing
• Additional requirements mandated by state/federal law and position responsibilities

Sign Language Requirements:

Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain an Advanced proficiency in sign language within one year of hire.

Please note: FSDB provides education to acquire sign language skills.

Hiring Salary Range: 11-month position $63,803.57 - $68,060.42. This range is inclusive of verified experience. Employees shall receive compensation for higher education beyond a Bachelor’s Degree as noted below.

Master’s Degree: additional $2,400

Master’s +30, or 2nd Master’s Degree, or Education Specialist, or Doctorate Degree: additional $2,400

Employees may earn any combination of degrees and receive that amount. Only one degree in each category will apply.

Hours: Monday – Friday; 7:30am to 3:30pm or 8:00am to 4:00pm
