Primary Function:

Responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency and other information between the campus community and on-duty campus police officers. Employ multiple transmitting devices, communicating with both internal and external sources, and directing operational message traffic within the department. Responsible for mass notifications during emergencies.

This position receives general supervision. Broad instructions are provided, and the staff member uses judgment and experience to carry out assignments. Completed assignments and finished products are reviewed by the supervisor after completion.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operations of the dispatch desk during the assigned shift.
  • Ensure that all incoming calls and visitors are dealt with properly and promptly.
  • Assign priority to requests for assistance.
  • Provide general University information.
  • Receive requests for assistance via phones, walk-ins, two-way radios, etc.
  • Monitor all incoming fire, burglary, and intrusion alarms.
  • Dispatch calls to the proper officer.
  • Notify the immediate supervisor of emergency situations.
  • Notify medics, police, and the fire department as needed.
  • Maintains awareness of officers’ status, particularly when responding to situations.
  • Understands patrol techniques and monitors situational developments; maintains full awareness when handling simultaneous actions.
  • Receive emergency building maintenance calls.
  • Notify appropriate parties.
  • Serves as the communications focal point for the University Police Department.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed logs and records of dispatch desk activities. Type, distribute, and file reports.
  • Assist with general office duties, including monitoring office supplies, performing data entry of arrest and offense information, processing traffic violation citations, etc.
  • Monitor fire and burglar alarms and closed video cameras; interacts with a variety of systems such as Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS), Tennessee Integrated Traffic Analysis Network (TITAN), Tennessee Criminal Justice Portal, HD Radar, Delt Alert, etc.
  • Monitor weather and HD Radar; recognizes when situations develop and makes necessary notifications to community members and University students

Judgement Required:

Judgment and discretion as to the use of established policies are required to perform the essential duties of this position.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

1 year of computer and record-keeping experience

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and work independently
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Proficiency in typing (minimum 50 WPM)
  • Ability to perform general office and administrative duties, including filing
