Director of Transportation



  • Lead and oversee all daily dispatch operations, ensuring efficient routing, scheduling, and on-time delivery performance across the trucking fleet
  • Manage and direct dispatch team members, providing coaching, performance management, and ongoing training to improve productivity and accuracy
  • Coordinate outbound and inbound shipments, assigning drivers and equipment based on capacity, priority, and service requirements
  • Develop and optimize delivery routes to reduce fuel costs, mileage, and transit times while maintaining high service levels
  • Monitor real-time dispatch activity, proactively resolving delays, service issues, or route disruptions
  • Oversee driver communication, ensuring clear instructions, compliance with schedules, and adherence to company policies and DOT regulations
  • Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, cost per mile, driver utilization, and load efficiency
  • Manage freight billing processes, ensuring accurate invoicing, rate application, and timely submission to customers
  • Review and reconcile transportation costs, including fuel, tolls, detention, and accessorial charges, identifying opportunities for cost savings
  • Collaborate with accounting and finance teams to ensure billing accuracy, margin control, and profitability of shipments
  • Maintain and oversee dispatch systems, TMS platforms, and GPS tracking tools to ensure accurate load visibility and reporting
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including DOT, safety, and hours-of-service requirements
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with drivers, carriers, and third-party logistics providers to support operational efficiency
  • Coordinate with warehouse, operations, and customer service teams to align dispatch schedules with order fulfillment and delivery expectations
  • Handle escalated customer issues related to deliveries, providing timely resolutions and maintaining high customer satisfaction
  • Analyze transportation data and reporting to identify trends, inefficiencies, and areas for process improvement
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) to streamline dispatch workflows and ensure consistency across the team
  • Manage fleet utilization, ensuring optimal use of company assets and minimizing downtime
  • Oversee carrier selection and negotiation when outsourcing loads, ensuring competitive rates and reliable service
  • Prepare and present operational reports to senior leadership, highlighting performance, challenges, and strategic initiatives
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on cost reduction, service enhancement, and scalability of dispatch operations
  • Support budgeting and forecasting for transportation and dispatch-related expenses
  • Ensure proper documentation and recordkeeping for all shipments, billing, and compliance requirements
  • Drive a culture of accountability, safety, and operational excellence within the dispatch function
