Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Athletics, the Director of Rodeo Operations – Head Coach is responsible for the development and maintenance of an effective and competitive National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) Rodeo Program. This position will be responsible for the planning, organizing and directing of rodeo program activities; scheduling and coordinating program events on campus; serve as a liaison between the Associate Dean of Athletics, personnel, outside agencies, vendors, boosters, students and parents.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as head coach and direct the Coalinga men's and women’s rodeo teams.
  • Oversee the direction of practices, coach the team at competitions, and adhere to all regulations, rules, procedures, and policies as established by the NIRA, Athletic Department, and the West Hills Community College District.
  • Administer, direct, and supervise all aspects of the rodeo program as they relate to facilities, schedules, student-athlete eligibility, physical examinations, equipment, transportation, and insurance.
  • Oversee outreach and student recruitment for the rodeo program, including planning and coordinating student recruiting visits and coordinating the recruiting database and notification system.
  • Teach rodeo courses consistent with the adopted course outline.
  • Responsible for maintenance of the rodeo facilities, including arena, horse and stock pens, as well as purchasing and care, and feeding of practice stock. Must ensure the humane treatment and health of all livestock.
  • Assist in the procurement of animals used for instruction.
  • Produce the annual College Coalinga Rodeo. Coordinate all rodeo events with appropriate campus and community personnel, e.g. Police, Risk Management, Contracts and Procurement, and Farm of the Future Operations.
  • Recommend for hire, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches and other staff associated with the rodeo program.
  • Participate in curriculum design and evaluation, program review, and other departmental activities, including accreditation and student learning outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain an environment conducive to the welfare and academic success of student-athletes that fosters collaboration with students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and the community. Advise and assist students as well as supervise student study sessions. Assist student athletes in completing their academic requirements at the community college to transfer to four-year institutions or to achieve their career goals.
  • Plan and coordinate fundraising activities that support the rodeo program and the rodeo scholarship program.
  • Coordinate with the financial aid department in issuing scholarships to student athletes.
  • Develop, allocate, and monitor the rodeo program budget and ensure compliance; approve and direct the purchase of equipment, supplies, and materials connected with the sport program.
  • Participates and represents the rodeo program and Athletic Department at community events as directed. Foster supportive relationships in the community that promote the rodeo program as well as the college. Participate in collaborative relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Develop and manage the rodeo budget and follow the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the District, Athletic Department, and the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA).
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of the applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, including NIRA bylaws and regulations and Title IX. Operations, services and activities of an intercollegiate rodeo sport program. Methods and techniques of leadership and management. Public relations principles and techniques. Interpersonal skills, using tact, patience and courtesy. Knowledge of educational and tutorial programs. Budget preparation and control. Principles and practices of administration, supervision and training. Facility maintenance, use, planning and safety regulations.


Abilities

Ability to plan, organize, control and direct intercollegiate rodeo sport program. Serve as liaison between administrators, personnel, parents, students, outside agencies and the community. Communicate effectively. Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships. Operate a computer and other assigned software. Analyze situations accurately and adopt a plan of action. Meet schedules and timelines. Work independently with little direction. Plan and organize work.


Education and Experience

This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and two years of coaching at the collegiate level in the assigned sport.


Licenses

Valid driver’s license.

Physical Abilities

Dexterity of hand and fingers to operate a variety of machines and equipment, standing and working for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching, hearing and speaking to exchange information, and lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds.


Working Conditions

Indoor and outdoor environment. Travel within and out of the district. Contact with blood and other body fluids, contact with abusive or aggressive individuals. Ability to work weekends and evenings. Ability to perform extensive physical labor. Accept the physical risk of working with livestock and equipment related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
