Job Summary

The Director of the Medical/Surgical Department provides operational leadership and clinical oversight for all activities within the Med/Surg unit. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care, compliance with all applicable regulations, and the implementation of departmental goals aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives. The Director manages staff performance, budget planning, workflow efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives to maintain high standards of care.

Essential Functions

  • Develops, implements, and monitors departmental goals, policies, and procedures
  • Directs patient care operations to ensure alignment with clinical, legal, and regulatory standards
  • Evaluates patient care delivery methods and nursing practices for quality improvement
  • Oversees staffing functions including recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and scheduling
  • Manages the department's budget and monitors expenditures in accordance with hospital policies
  • Leads departmental audits, quality metrics reviews, and improvement plans
  • Facilitates interdisciplinary communication and coordination of patient care services
  • Promotes staff development and fosters an environment of continuous learning and professional growth
  • Participates in executive and interdepartmental meetings and committees

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong clinical background in acute care nursing, particularly in med/surg settings

  • Knowledge of accreditation standards, healthcare regulations, and quality improvement practices

  • Populations Served: Care provided to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations

  • Occasional lifting of supplies and equipment up to 50 lbs

  • Requires appropriate use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols
Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) (Preferred)
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (Required).

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current RN license in practicing state (Required).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within timeframe required by facility policy.

Experience

  • 3-5 years clinical nursing experience (Required)
  • 2 years of previous management experience (Preferred).
