A well established and rapidly growing facility services organization is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Mechanical Services to lead its mechanical and HVAC engineering services. This senior leadership role will oversee engineering excellence, project execution, and operational performance across a diverse portfolio of commercial and industrial facilities. This position offers the opportunity to fully own and elevate mechanical engineering operations within a growing organization that values technical expertise, accountability, and long-term client partnerships.
This is a HYBRID (3 days/week) position, in Woodbridge, VA.
🔍 About the Role
The Director of Mechanical Services will serve as the senior technical and operational leader for the mechanical division, overseeing HVAC engineering, design/build projects, and technical services. This role blends engineering leadership with operational, financial, and client-facing responsibilities and will play a critical role in shaping service delivery, profitability, and future growth. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in commercial HVAC and mechanical systems, strong business acumen, and a collaborative leadership style suited for a fast-paced, service-driven environment.
🛠️ Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Project Leadership
- Lead all mechanical engineering, design, and construction activities for commercial HVAC and mechanical projects.
- Oversee projects from preconstruction through closeout, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget adherence.
- Prepare and review scopes of work, feasibility studies, system assessments, cost analyses, and technical reports.
- Conduct peer reviews, condition assessments, and order-of-magnitude cost estimates.
Client & Business Development
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships; act as a senior technical advisor and escalation point.
- Support business development efforts, including proposal development, fee estimates, and client presentations.
- Participate in contract negotiations and high-value client discussions.
Financial & Contract Oversight
- Own division-level P&L responsibility, including budgeting, forecasting, margin management, and cost controls.
- Review and manage contracts to ensure scope clarity, risk mitigation, and financial alignment.
- Oversee billing, change orders, collections, and financial reporting in partnership with accounting and operations.
Operational Excellence
- Drive operational efficiency through process improvements, performance metrics, and resource optimization.
- Monitor KPIs related to project performance, labor productivity, and profitability.
- Implement initiatives to reduce labor and material costs while maintaining safety, quality, and compliance.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop project managers, engineers, and field leadership.
- Establish staffing plans, training programs, and succession strategies.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture across engineering, operations, and finance teams.
✅ What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Management, or a related field
- 10+ years of experience in commercial mechanical/HVAC services or contracting, with a strong understanding of day‑to‑day field operations
- 5+ years in a senior leadership role, overseeing mechanical teams, service delivery, and operations
- Hands‑on field experience as a service technician or equivalent early career exposure
- Deep technical knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, plumbing, and mechanical design/build
- Proven experience with P&L ownership, contract management, and financial performance
- Ability to balance strategic leadership with hands‑on operational execution
- Strong client facing, communication, and decision making skills
- Sales or business development experience is a plus
- HVAC and safety certifications (EPA 608, NATE, HVAC Excellence, OSHA), preferred
- Willingness to travel up to 20%
Base Salary Range: $165,000 - $180,000; based on experience. This role is also eligible for quarterly bonuses.
