The Prince George’s County Councilis currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Director of Communications(Administrative Specialist 2G, Grade G31) position in the Office of Communications.

About the Position
This is management level, professional, and administrative generalist work performed in conjunction with the administration of a major program within a department. Incumbents provide key management level, administrative and technical support to a Deputy Director position or may function as the division chief within a programmatical functional area.

About the Agency
All legislative powers of the County are vested in the County Council. In addition, the County Council sits as the District Council on zoning and land use matters, and as the Board of Health on health policy matters.
  • Provides leadership and direction to staff professionals, establishes goals and objectives, and monitors and measures progress.
  • Directs the execution of strategic, coordinated and effective messaging across Council communications channels
  • Actively cultivates and manages relationships with reporters, media executives, and organizational partners to ensure fair and accurate coverage of the Council’s decisions and activities.
  • Provides full and accurate reports about programs and issues involving the Council.
  • Utilizes professional experience to develop public relations strategies that stimulate public dialogue and mold public opinion.
  • Prepares and distributes promotional publications and collaterals, including newsletters and informational brochures.
  • Maintains, prepares, and distributes biographical data, including photographs for educational use, or public events in all media.
  • Serves as special project coordinator of various County programs or projects; evaluates various alternatives and recommends optimum solutions to management.
  • Responds to the most complex requests for information.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree from an accredited College or University in Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in governmental activities related to the position assignment.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or related field
  • 8 to 10 years of continuous experience in communications, public relations, or media relations
  • Supervisory leadership experience managing teams and cross functional projects
  • Experience supporting communications for elected officials
  • Experience working in County Government
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
