About the Position:Investigates a variety of the more major or complex criminal cases for the department. Obtains information and evidence required to determine if a crime has been committed; arrests suspects; prepares cases for prosecution. Prepares and maintains required records and reports.
  • Directs and conducts investigations of felony and misdemeanor cases.
  • Compiles and analyzes evidence and information; interviews witnesses and other relevant parties to obtain statements and information; interrogates suspects to ascertain information; prepares facts and documentation to obtain and serve warrants subpoenas, and other court orders as necessary to develop assigned cases.
  • Secures crime scenes and coordinates crime scene investigations; collects latent fingerprints; preserves and collects needed information and evidence.

Click here to view the full job description.Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
  • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth (12th) grade.
  • College level coursework in police science, administration of justice or a related field is desirable.
  • Three (3) years of law enforcement experience which involved crime scene investigation, of which at least one year was at the level of Deputy Sheriff.
Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

License & Special Requirements:
  • Current Peace Officers' Standards and Training (POST) basic law enforcement certificate
  • A valid first aid and CPR certificate from a certified trainer/provider
  • A valid California driver's license
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation prior to employment.
The department is recruiting to fill one (1) Extra Help vacancy.
In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Detective-Investigator (Extra Help), as well as subsequent vacancies which occur during the life of the eligibility list.
New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.
