Overview:
The Design Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end planning and design of fiber optic networks. This includes developing comprehensive network layouts, selecting suitable materials and equipment, and ensuring compliance with all applicable standards and regulations. The role demands a mix of technical expertise, fieldwork, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver efficient and high-performance fiber optic infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Develop end-to-end fiber optic network designs including route selection, capacity planning, and equipment layout.
Perform feasibility studies and optimize designs for performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
Create detailed technical documentation such as schematics, blueprints, and network diagrams using CAD, GIS, Frogs, and other specialized design tools.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date design records throughout the project lifecycle.
Identify environmental, structural, and logistical constraints that may impact network implementation.
Determine the appropriate fiber cable types, splicing hardware, conduits, and connectors.
Prepare and manage comprehensive BOMs based on project specifications.
Ensure all designs comply with local, state, and federal regulations as well as industry standards (e.g., BICSI, NEC, ANSI/TIA).
Coordinate with the internal permitting team to secure required approvals.
Liaise with project managers, field engineers, construction crews, and vendors to align design goals with project execution.
Participate in design reviews and provide technical input to support decision-making.
Assist construction teams with design-related questions during the build phase.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during installation to maintain design integrity.
Ensure designs meet performance, durability, and safety standards.
Review and validate completed designs for accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
Qualifications & Skills
Experience with fiber network design software (e.g., AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Etc.).
Strong knowledge of fiber optic technologies, construction practices, and design principles.
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
