(A-E Steps)

Deputy Probation Officer I:

$26.24 - $31.89 Hourly/$2,099.20 - $2,551.20 Biweekly

Deputy Probation Officer II:

$28.96 - $35.21 Hourly/$2,316.80 - $2,816.80 Biweekly

About the Position:
DPO I:
Entry-level- Incumbents learn department policies and procedures and the essential skills to perform probation work.

DPO II:
Journey-level- Incumbents in this class will have a basic understanding of probation work and have acquired the essential skills to perform general investigative and case management duties.
  • Performs peace officer duties, including investigative and arrest duties related to adult and/or juvenile cases.
  • Monitors assigned probationary caseload of juveniles and/or adults; completes risk and need assessments on assigned probationers; develops rehabilitation treatment programs and ensures adherence to conditions of probation.
  • DPO I: Assists with special programs.
  • DPO II: Participates in administration of special programs, including grant programs, work release programs, etc., as assigned.

Knowledge of:
DPO I/II:
  • Basic principles and practices of applied psychology.
  • Causes, extent and control of crime and delinquency.
  • Interviewing techniques.
  • Applicable Federal, State, County, Department, and Division laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Techniques for dealing effectively with and providing a high level of customer service to all individuals contacted in the course of work.
DPO II (in addition to the above):
  • Current trends in probation treatment programs.
  • Principles and practices of juvenile and adult probation work.
  • Legal statutes and court decisions pertaining to juvenile and adult probation.
  • Federal, state and local laws and ordinances applicable to adult and juvenile probation
  • Court procedures.

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Equivalent to the completion of twelfth (12th) grade and graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in behavioral or social sciences, or a closely related liberal arts field of study. Two years of related work experience may be substituted for one year of the required education.

DPO I:One (1) year of experience in a criminal justice field performing duties that include substantial case management or supervision of adults or adolescent youths.

DPO II:One (1) year of experience as a Deputy Probation Officer I.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Successful entry-level officers are eligible to advance to Deputy Probation Officer II after completion of training, and one (1) years’ experience in the Deputy Probation Officer I position.


Licenses & Special Requirements:

  • Requires a valid California driver’s license.
  • Requires a current certification or recertification in CPR and First Aid.

DPO I(Must, within 12 months of employment):

  • Successfully complete the California Board of Corrections and Rehabilitation state mandated Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) Probation Officer Core course certification, and,
  • Successfully complete the requirements for Penal Code 832 certification.

DPO II:Must maintain Penal Code 832 qualifications, and California Board of Corrections and Rehabilitation certifications under the Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) program.

The department is recruiting for multiple vacancies.

In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future full-time vacancies for a Deputy Probation Officer I/II, as well as subsequent vacancies, which occur during the life of the eligibility list.

New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.
