This class is the first level in a two-level Fire Marshal Series devoted to providing fire safety inspections, fire plan reviews, and life safety education. Incumbents conduct comprehensive technical inspections of buildings and property to verify that exits, fire protection equipment and systems, building construction, interior finishes and occupant loads conform to applicable fire and safety laws, regulations, and standards. Work may include providing advanced, skilled reviews of building systems or structural plans for compliance with building codes, and serving as lead workers, assigning work, and monitoring completion. As assigned, incumbents may provide public fire and life safety education to local citizens, organizations, governmental agencies, and schools through lectures, training, and demonstrations.
NOTE: Please provide a pre-qualification letter from the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (NCOSFM) if you do not hold a standard or probationary fire certificate from North Carolina.

- Explains and interprets provisions of fire codes to building owners, managers, and employers
- Issues summons for fire hazards not corrected on subsequent inspections and enforces the code when the responsible party fails to cooperate
- Provide educational training related to fire and life safety procedures and practices
- Determines compliance and issues operational permits
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 3 to 5 years’ experience in training, fire suppression, fire investigation, fire protection, fire prevention, or a related field
OR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licensing and Certifications:- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Possess a minimum of a Fire Inspector Level I or higher certification issued through the Office of State Fire Marshal Code Officials Qualification Board

Work Environment and Physical Effort:Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of forcefrequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment:Work is typically performed in an office or similar indoor environment, outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), and in a vehicle. Employees may occasionally work in a construction site, confined space, warehouse environment, or shop environment.
Work Exposures:Work in this position does not require frequent environmental exposures. Employees may occasionally be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, individuals with known violent backgrounds, extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), communicable diseases, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, or loud noises(85+ decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
