Deputy Director of Operations

Kumon of Crofton
Crofton, MD

THE OPPORTUNITY

Kumon of Crofton has been serving families in the Crofton, Maryland area for over 15 years. We are a thriving Kumon franchise center specializing in math and reading programs for students of all ages — from early learners to advanced high schoolers.

We are looking for a Deputy Director of Operations to lead the day-to-day excellence of our center. This is not a typical education job. It is a hands-on operational leadership role with a deliberate growth path built in — for the right person, this position is a masterclass in running an education business.

Our center director has 15 years of experience building and running a successful Kumon franchise. She is intentionally building a team that can operate with excellence without her daily presence — and she is committed to mentoring the right person toward that capability.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

Center Operations

  • Oversee all daily center operations from open to close
  • Ensure every student session runs smoothly and quietly
  • Maintain center cleanliness, organization, and professionalism
  • Complete open and close checklists daily without exception

Student Progress

  • Track student advancement and ASHR progress monthly
  • Identify students who are stagnant or declining and act
  • Ensure 100% of work is graded and entered nightly
  • Recognize student achievements and keep families informed

Family Relationships

  • Build trust with every family through consistent communication
  • Onboard new families with a seamless, welcoming experience
  • Resolve parent concerns before they escalate
  • Conduct 30-day check-ins with all new families

Team & Enrollment

  • Lead, coach, and hold staff accountable to clear standards
  • Follow up on every prospective family within 48 hours
  • Drive net enrollment growth of 5+ subjects per month
  • Submit monthly reports and manage aged accounts

The right person for this role has a specific combination of drive, character, and ambition. If this sounds like you, we want to hear from you.

You Are A Strong Fit If You…

  • Want to eventually own or run an education center
  • Take ownership seriously — you finish what you start
  • Are energized by children and believe in their potential
  • Lead with warmth and hold people accountable without drama
  • Are organized, systems-oriented, and detail-driven
  • Communicate proactively — you don’t wait to be asked
  • Are comfortable with data and use it to make decisions
  • Want a mentor, not just a manager

This Is Probably Not For You If…

  • You’re looking for a low-key part-time job with minimal responsibility
  • You prefer to be told exactly what to do every day
  • You struggle with accountability conversations
  • Consistency and follow-through aren’t your strengths
  • You’re not genuinely interested in education or child development
  • You need a traditional 9–5 Monday–Friday schedule

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, business, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in an operations, management, or leadership role

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and hold a team accountable
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional in all interactions

Preferred (not required)

  • Experience in education, tutoring, or child development
  • Familiarity with Kumon or other supplemental education programs

  • Clear systems, documented expectations, no guesswork
  • Small, focused team with real ownership and autonomy
  • Afternoons and evenings schedule — mornings free
