Under the direction of the Vice President, Academic Services, the Academic Dean (Nursing and Allied Health)/Director of Nursing Programs provides leadership, direction, and administrative oversight for the Nursing and Allied Health programs across the District. This position serves in a dual capacity:

  • As an Academic Dean, providing division-level leadership, and
  • As the Director of Nursing Programs, serving as the administrator with regulatory authority and responsibility in accordance with California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulations.

The Dean/Director is responsible for planning, organization, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and services that support student success, workforce preparation and community needs. The position ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including accreditation and licensing requirements, and maintains effective partnerships with healthcare providers and community stakeholders.


In collaboration with other academic administrators, the Dean ensures implementation of Career Technical Education (CTE) requirements and workforce alignment activities within assigned divisions. This educational administrator classification combines broad administrative oversight of instructional programs with the regulatory authority required of a Nursing Program Director. The incumbent is accountable for program quality, accreditation, fiscal management, personnel supervision, and continuous improvement aligned with District priorities.


Division assignments and program responsibilities may be modified to support District priorities and organizational needs.

In the Role of Academic Dean of Nursing and Allied Health:

  • Provide leadership and administrative direction for Nursing and Allied Health programs and collaborate with college administrators, faculty, and staff to achieve institutional goals and objectives.
  • Develop and manage the instructional class schedule for Nursing and Allied Health programs across campuses, aligning course offerings with enrollment management goals, student demand, clinical placement availability, and facility constraints.
  • Ensure effective academic services support for programs located across District campuses, including coordination of instructional and clinical learning environments.
  • Ensure that facilities, laboratories, simulation environments, equipment, and instructional resources are properly maintained, updated, and aligned with program needs, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead program review, evaluation, and continuous improvement processes for Nursing and Allied Health programs using institutional and program-specific data to support planning, resource allocation, and decision-making aligned with District priorities.
  • Recommend and implement approved plans, policies, and practices to strengthen program operations, student outcomes, and workforce alignment.
  • Support institutional accreditation processes and ensure programs maintain compliance with accreditation standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Promote the effective integration of instructional technologies, simulation, and distance education practices to support high-quality instruction and student learning.
  • Collaborate with academic administrators, student services, and campus leadership to advance student success initiatives, including outreach, recruitment, retention, and completion efforts that support healthcare career pathways.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with healthcare providers, clinical agencies, and community organizations.
  • Direct, supervise, and evaluate assigned academic, classified, and management personnel.
  • Provide leadership for professional development and training activities for faculty and staff, including those related to clinical instruction, regulatory requirements, and emerging industry practices.
  • Develop, recommend and administer division budgets for Nursing and Allied Health programs ensuring alignment with program needs, regulatory requirements and District priorities.
  • Direct and participate in the preparation of grant proposals and external funding opportunities that support healthcare workforce development and program expansion.
  • In collaboration with other academic deans and support personnel, ensure accountability for Career Technical Education (CTE) requirements within assigned programs, including advisory committees, industry engagement, and alignment with workforce needs.
  • Participate in shared governance and decision-making through service on Management Council, Instructional Council, Deans Council, Curriculum Committee, and other committees as assigned.
  • Prepare and present governing board items, reports, and recommendations related to Nursing and Allied Health programs.
  • Serve as evening administrator as required.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the scope and responsibilities of the position.

In the role of Director of Nursing Program:

  • Serve as the registered nurse administrator with full authority and responsibility for the nursing program in accordance with California Board of Registered Nursing regulations (California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Sections 1420(h) and 1425(a)).
  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the nursing program, including curriculum development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement in alignment with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Provide leadership for nursing program planning and ensure adequate resources are in place to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements, including responsibilities outlined in BRN regulations (Title 16, Section 1420(h)).
  • Ensure development, implementation, and consistent application of nursing program policies and procedures in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and oversee clinical education, including placement, supervision, and evaluation processes, ensuring clinical experiences meet regulatory and educational standards.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies, including BRN, ACEN, and Title 5 requirements.
  • Lead accreditation activities, including program approvals, reporting, and substantive change processes.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to regulatory and accrediting agencies, including required reporting, communication, and response to regulatory actions.
  • Oversee student admissions, progression, retention, and completion processes in accordance with program policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor program outcomes, including licensure pass rates, completion rates, and job placement, to support program effectiveness and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure faculty meet regulatory qualifications and maintain appropriate staffing levels to support program delivery.
  • Maintain required records, reports, and documentation to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Utilize data and program outcomes to support evaluation, planning, and ongoing program improvement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination equivalent to:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Nursing Education
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience in a nursing in a pre or post licensure nursing program
  • Two (2) years of administrative or leadership experience reasonably related to the assignment; and
  • One (1) year of clinical experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

AND

  • Must meet all applicable requirements of regulatory and accrediting agencies (e.g., Board of Registered Nursing) for program director oversight.

  • Teaching experience in both didactic and clinical settings.

Licenses and Other Requirements:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • An incumbent must be insurable at the "standard rate" by the employer's insurance carrier at all times while employed in this classification by the College of the Sequoias.
