The Town of East Hartford is seeking a dedicated and reliable Custodian to join our team at the Senior Services Center. This position is responsible for performing general cleaning and minor maintenance duties to ensure town buildings, adjacent walks and grounds, and equipment are maintained in a clean, orderly, and functional condition. The Custodian also provides assistance to officials, staff, visitors, and other employees as needed.

  • Receive oral or written instructions from supervisor and perform work according to standard procedures and building operational schedules.
    • Clean rooms, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, stairways, and windows.
    • Sweep, mop, strip, and wax floors using brooms, mops, and floor equipment.
    • Vacuum rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds.
    • Dust furniture and equipment; wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
    • Empty wastebaskets and replenish restroom supplies.
    • Replace light bulbs and perform minor maintenance tasks.
    • Set up and tear down chairs, tables, and equipment for meetings and events.
    • Prepare rooms for use by private organizations.
    • Clear snow from entrances and maintain adjacent walks.
    • Pick up and deliver supplies and materials to designated rooms.
    • Follow all applicable safety rules and procedures.
    • Report work accomplished orally or on written work order to supervisor.

  • ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:

    • Participate in general cleaning, painting, and repair work.
    • Use hand tools and power tools to make minor maintenance repairs.
    • Provide assistance to officials, staff, visitors, and other employees as necessary.
    • Check building at beginning and end of shifts.


Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Basic building maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Proper handling and storage of cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, carpet cleaners).
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance and repairs using hand and power tools.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 25–50 pounds.
  • Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).
  • Ability to interact courteously with officials, staff, and the public.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.Previous experience in building cleaning and maintenance work preferred.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but straightforward oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to relate to officials, staff, and the public in a courteous manner.
  • Ability to acquire job skills with three months of on-the-job training.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 25–50 pounds.
  • Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
