CIRE’s Cultural Resources Manager serves a crucial role in the organization and will be a key partner to the Director and Associate Director in ensuring continuity of day-to-day operations. The Cultural Resources Manager works with a high degree of independence, decision-making and initiative in managing complex cultural resources tasks and projects executed for Federal, Tribal and State partners.
Reporting to the Director, the Cultural Resources Manager will:
- Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) for task-based cultural resources projects including Section 106, Section 110, archaeological and artifact surveys, NEPA-support surveys and Tribal consultations on Federal, State, Tribal and private-sector lands as assigned, and successfully manage project execution, budgets and timelines
- Supervise and mentor the personnel, and coordinate and manage the equipment and logistics required for successful execution of the CIRE Cultural Resources Program
- Prepare progress and final reports and other documents and communications as required
- Exercise independent analysis and judgment in prioritizing situations requiring attention and take steps to ensure strategic and operational priorities progress in a timely fashion
- Demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills in managing the flow of issues and projects and successfully address problems within the Center
- Assist the Director and Associate Director in managing day-to-day collaboration with Federal, Tribal, State, and private-sector partners
- Assist the Director and Associate Director in managing internal University of Montana collaboration among faculty, colleges, schools, departments, and labs, and external collaboration with other institutions of higher learning and private companies
- Develop task-based research proposals offered and executed by the Center
- Assist in the review and editing of internal and external pre-award and post-award agreement and contract documents and other associated documents and communications
- Seek new task-based research opportunities with existing and new Federal, State and Tribal partners and actively and positively promote the capabilities of the University of Montana and CIRE
- Professionally represent CIRE and the University of Montana at conferences, conventions, and meetings
- Manage other projects and related functions as assigned by CIRE leadership staff
A Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archeology, Cultural Resources Management, Architectural History or closely related field and
Ten (10) years’ experience successfully executing task-based on-site cultural resources research projects for a private sector organization, university or government organization
Professional accreditation (e.g., Registered Professional Archaeologist) by a nationally recognized cultural resources organization.

- Ability to perform complex tasks while prioritizing multiple projects
- Sound judgement necessary to make critical administrative and procedural decisions
- Leadership skills and the ability to oversee and manage complex, challenging tasks and associated personnel
- Ability to cultivate and maintain strong internal and external working relationships
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and schedule work projects for self and others
- Ability to thoughtfully manage conflict
- Ability to professionally represent CIRE and the University of Montana at conferences, conventions, and meetings
- Ability to facilitate effective meetings and collaborative processes
- Ability to effectively present project results and findings to cooperators and the public
- Experience with MS Office Suite, including MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
