WSP is searching for a solid waste (e.g., landfills, mines, other waste containment facilities) Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) Engineering Technician to join our Civil, Ground Engineering & Materials team in Irvine, California.
The successful candidate will perform CQA monitoring, sampling, testing, and documentation services for earthen and geosynthetic containment systems for local and national energy, industrial, and municipal and/or mining facilities. Additional duties and responsibilities may include supporting environmental or geotechnical site investigations and other field-related activities.
Your Impact
• Field monitoring, testing, and sampling of soil and aggregate materials
• Use of a nuclear gauge, sand cone, and drive cylinder for soil moisture-density testing
• Geosynthetics CQA monitoring and testing
• General construction observation and documentation
• Interpreting construction documents (construction drawings, technical specifications, and CQA Plans) to confirm projects are completed in accordance with approved plans
• Interaction with contractors and owners in a positive and constructive manner to resolve construction issues
• Attending construction meetings and preparing meeting minutes
• Generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebooks
• Assisting with other field activities as needed including but not limited to conducting field characterization (drilling), stormwater sampling, and groundwater sampling
• Participating and contributing to daily safety meetings
• Legal and safe vehicle operations on behalf of the company
• Maintaining quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurement and documentation
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• 9+ years of related experience
• Geosynthetics Certification Institute-Inspector Certification Program (GCI-ICP) certification for compacted soil liner and geosynthetics (or the ability to obtain certification).
certified to use nuclear density gauges for soil compaction testing
• The ability to perform duties within established deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy
• The ability to serve as the Lead CQA Technician for large geosynthetics installation project
• The ability to train junior staff on proper earthworks and geosynthetics CQA procedures
• Travel, including travel for extended assignments is required
• Daily report writing and construction documentation is required
• The ability to communicate constructively with contractors, owners, engineers and Project Managers is essential
• Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, compute rate, ratio, percent, and draw and interpret bar graphs
• Analytical mindset to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
• Ability to work schedules to accommodate project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, self-motivation, and strong work ethic
• Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls
• Ability to speak and hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and walk up/down slopes
• Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools
• Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
• Must be able to work up to 12-hours per day outdoors in hot or cold environments safely.
• Valid U.S drivers license and satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
• Associates or four-year degree
• An understanding of civil and geotechnical engineering design and background in earthworks construction, including the ability to read and understand technical civil design drawings and technical specifications.
• Current First Aid/CPR/AED training
• Current MSHA Part 48 training
• Current OSHA 40 hour Hazwoper training and certificate.
• Experience with on-site geotechnical lab testing

Compensation
Expected Salary: $39.00- $54.00/hr
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
