Step into a leadership role that drives safety, structure, and excellence at one of Louisiana’s largest correctional facilities. Elayn Hunt Correctional Center is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Corrections Captain to serve as an essential member of our security leadership team. In this role, you will work closely with the Corrections Major as an assistant yard supervisor and provide second-line supervision over a Corrections Lieutenant, Master Sergeants/Corrections, Corrections Sergeants, and Cadets across A, B, C, or D Team.

Three years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR2. One year of experience in any field; OR3. Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.One year of this experience must have been in a position equivalent in scope of responsibility or complexity of work performed to a Corrections Lieutenant in the State service.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.Possession of a current driver's license.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.
Job Duties:
- Meets daily with the shift supervisor to review operational priorities, address emerging issues, and ensure alignment across the team. Ensures the daily Roll Call Training Topic is fully prepared, clearly communicated, and effectively delivered during roll call to reinforce expectations and support staff readiness
- Provides strong, consistent supervision to the Corrections Lieutenant, partnering with the Unit Manager and Colonel to lead staff meetings focused on security operations, problem-solving, policy updates, staff morale, inmate behavior, and any issues impacting overall facility performance.
- Communicates critical information promptly and accurately to the Major, Colonel, and Unit Manager, ensuring leadership remains fully informed of operational developments, concerns, and emerging needs.
- Maintains full accountability for assigned post, remaining on duty until properly relieved and ensuring continuity of operations at all times.
- Conducts thorough pass-downs to the incoming Captain, transferring all equipment, updates, and essential information to support seamless shift transitions.
- Collaborates regularly with the shift Major and Lieutenants, meeting to discuss management priorities, operational challenges, and team performance. Makes rounds with shift supervisors to monitor security practices, reinforce expectations, and support staff in real time.
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: Promotion of a permanent, classified employee of LA DPS&C - CORRECTIONS SERVICES (Adult DOC)
- The selected employee may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted or may be required to accept a probational appointment.
Compensation:This position has a Special Entrance Rate of $24.64 per hour.
There is ‘Premium Pay’ for this position: A rate between $1.00 an hour and $2.00 an hour for each hour worked based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.
