Controls Engineer


The Controls Engineer is responsible for supporting and executing technical initiatives related to plant automation and control systems. This role involves maintaining electrical distribution systems, implementing control system improvements, assisting with equipment start-ups, maintaining automation documentation, and diagnosing control-related issues.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate technical and strategic automation projects within a fast-moving manufacturing environment
  • Assist with the deployment of new systems by configuring control modules and designing HMI interfaces
  • Improve process control performance through initiatives such as advanced process control, alarm management, and operator interface enhancements
  • Oversee the integration and functionality of PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and related control systems
  • Train plant personnel on the operation and functionality of newly installed or modified automation systems
  • Support the standardization of control architecture, control logic, operational procedures, and system documentation including as-built drawings
  • Act as the internal point of contact during system startups and commissioning activities performed by external automation vendors and integrators, ensuring proper documentation and knowledge transfer
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and maintain automation documentation such as electrical schematics, functional descriptions, PLC programs, and SCADA configurations
  • Diagnose and resolve automation issues within processing systems
  • Lead or support automation improvement initiatives and optimization projects
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to Instrumentation and Controls Technicians
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required


Skills and Qualifications

  • Ability to read, interpret, modify, and upgrade PLC programs (Rockwell experience preferred; Siemens experience beneficial), VFDs, and industrial networking equipment
  • Experience updating and maintaining P&IDs and electrical or mechanical drawings (AutoCAD preferred)
  • Strong analytical ability to evaluate workflows, redesign processes, and implement improved procedures or policies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across teams and departments
  • Ability to assess and address training needs related to automation systems and operational processes
  • Comfortable working with engineering drawings, manuals, and technical documentation
  • Ability to manage uncertainty and adapt in a fast-paced operational environment
  • Reliable attendance is required for this role
  • Must have strong English reading, writing, and speaking skills
