Controls Engineer
Location: Tuscaloosa, AL

Shift: 2nd Shift (7:00 PM – 4:00 AM)
Salary: $90,000 – $110,000 annually

Job Summary
The Controls Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting control system software and hardware to reduce machine downtime and improve overall system efficiency. This role supports a Just-In-Time (JIT), complex assembly manufacturing environment and works closely with plant maintenance and cross-functional teams to meet production, quality, and continuous improvement goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain PLC, HMI, and control system software and hardware improvements to enhance production efficiency and product quality
- Troubleshoot, modify, and program PLCs to resolve equipment issues and minimize downtime
- Support and maintain multiple automated machinery systems in a high-volume manufacturing environment
- Coordinate and manage work with outside contractors, vendors, and equipment suppliers
- Collaborate with production, engineering, and maintenance teams to ensure optimal performance of production lines
- Maintain accurate documentation for machine parameters, changes, drawings, diagrams, manuals, and preventive maintenance programs
- Requisition tools, equipment, and supplies as needed and ensure adequate spare parts inventory to minimize production interruptions
- Assist with new equipment launches and engineering change initiatives
- Ensure compliance with ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 procedures and processes
- Maintain proper housekeeping and safety standards within assigned areas
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field
- 5–6 years of experience in a manufacturing or controls engineering environment (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Experience working closely with plant maintenance teams
- Strong PLC programming and troubleshooting experience, including:
- Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and MicroLogix
- Ability to read, understand, and modify ladder logic
- Siemens PLC experience is a plus
- HMI programming experience (PanelView or equivalent)
- Experience with industrial automation equipment, including:
- FANUC and/or ABB robots
- Vision systems
- Experience with electric torque control systems (Atlas Copco, Stanley, or equivalent)

- Ability to supervise or lead plant maintenance personnel during absences of the Maintenance Engineer
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
