Controls Engineer - 2nd Shift

The Controls Engineer is responsible for supporting and enhancing automated manufacturing systems within a high-volume, just-in-time automotive environment. This role focuses on improving equipment reliability, reducing downtime, and optimizing system performance through effective troubleshooting, programming, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Working closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams, this position plays a key role in maintaining production stability while driving efficiency across complex assembly processes.


Core Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and resolve equipment and automation issues to minimize downtime and maintain production flow.
  • Develop, modify, and optimize PLC and control system programs to improve performance, quality, and system reliability.
  • Support and enhance automated systems including robotics, HMIs, and integrated manufacturing equipment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify process improvements and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Lead and support continuous improvement initiatives focused on uptime, cycle time reduction, and waste elimination.
  • Coordinate with external vendors, integrators, and contractors to support equipment upgrades, repairs, and new installations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for control systems, including program revisions, schematics, and equipment records.
  • Support preventive maintenance efforts by identifying recurring issues and implementing long-term corrective actions.
  • Ensure proper spare parts strategies are in place to support critical equipment and minimize production interruptions.
  • Participate in new program launches, equipment installations, and process validations.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality system requirements.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting automation and controls in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong PLC programming and troubleshooting experience, preferably with Rockwell platforms (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix).
  • Experience working with HMI systems and operator interfaces.
  • Familiarity with automated manufacturing equipment and production systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with robotic systems (e.g., Fanuc, ABB) and vision systems.
  • Knowledge of electric torque systems (e.g., Atlas Copco, Stanley).
  • Exposure to Siemens PLC platforms.
  • Prior experience in a Tier 1 automotive or high-volume assembly environment.
