Controller – Commercial Real Estate
Location: Long Island, NY (On-Site, 5 Days/Week)
Compensation: $160,000 - $180,000 + Benefits

About the Role
A confidential, Long Island-based commercial real estate management and development firm is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee and manage all accounting and financial operations across a diverse portfolio of approximately 20 commercial properties totaling 3 million square feet.
This is a hands-on role, combining routine bookkeeping with higher-level financial oversight. The position reports to senior leadership and works closely with the current principal during a transition period, offering a unique opportunity for mentorship and knowledge transfer.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee full-cycle property accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance
- Review and manage all company lease inputs to ensure accurate lease administration
- Prepare, review, and submit internal and external financial reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports
- Monitor banking transactions, account balances, and cash management activities
- Reconcile monthly accruals and prepare bank reconciliations
- Supervise accounting staff handling general accounting, payables, and receivables
- Monitor accounting activity for building construction projects
- Review weekly payroll, submit quarterly IRS/NYS payroll reports, and interface with 401(k) plan administration
- Coordinate year-end audit functions with external auditors and prepare annual reporting for IDAs and county tax submissions
- Prepare and submit periodic mortgagee reporting
- Monitor company benefits programs and leasing commissions
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
Candidate Profile
- 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in commercial real estate or property management
- Strong experience with Sage Construction and Real Estate 300 (Timberline) preferred
- Solid bookkeeping skills, including AP/AR, general ledger, payroll, and reconciliations
- Familiarity with budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and internal controls
- Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a small team setting
- Local to Long Island, NY, or willing to commute daily
- Professional, steady, and mentorship-oriented, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
