We are seeking an experienced Controller with a strong nonprofit background to lead all accounting operations for a well-established, mission-driven organization with approximately $36M in annual revenue.


This is a highly visible leadership role partnering directly with the executive team, Board, and program leadership. The Controller will oversee complex funding streams, including significant government grants, and play a key role in financial strategy, compliance, and operational improvement.


Nonprofit accounting experience is required for this position.


What You’ll Do

  • Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, and month-end close
  • Prepare and present accurate, timely financial statements to leadership and the Board
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and Uniform Guidance
  • Oversee financial management of complex government funding, including multi-year grants and contracts
  • Develop and manage cost allocation methodologies across programs and funding sources
  • Lead the annual audit and Single Audit process; act as primary liaison with external auditors
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of 7–8 accounting professionals
  • Partner with program leaders on budgeting, forecasting, and contract performance
  • Support executive leadership with financial insights and strategic decision-making
  • Step in for the CFO as needed, including financial presentations and leadership support
  • Identify and implement process improvements, system enhancements, and internal controls
  • Manage the annual indirect cost rate application process


What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
  • Required: 7+ years of nonprofit accounting experience, including government grant management
  • Experience working within organizations with $12M+ in revenue or budget
  • Strong knowledge of Uniform Guidance, cost allocation, and Single Audit requirements
  • Experience managing complex, multi-program funding environments
  • Prior supervisory experience with proven ability to lead and develop teams
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with Financial Edge NXT strongly preferred
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to present financial data to non-financial stakeholders


Highly Preferred:

  • Experience working with Head Start contracts or similar government-funded programs
