Controls Engineer III

Location: Charlotte, NC (Onsite)

Travel: Up to 50% (Hickory & Wilmington, NC facilities)

Duration: 1 year contract opportunity

Interview Process: 30-minute Teams Interview + 60-minute Panel Interview

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 50% travel to manufacturing facilities in Hickory and Wilmington, NC.
  • Occasional travel to supplier and vendor locations for equipment acceptance testing and pre-shipment reviews.

Work Schedule

  • Standard schedule of approximately 40 hours per week.
  • Flexibility required during equipment installation, startup, and commissioning activities.
  • Occasional weekend, holiday, or extended-hour support may be required.



Key Responsibilitie

  • Lead controls engineering activities for automation and capital projects from concept development through design, installation, startup, and commissioning
  • Design, develop, and deploy integrated machine control and process automation systems using PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and related technologies
  • Create and support electrical control architectures, functional specifications, and system integration requirements
  • Provide technical leadership to contractors, machine builders, system integrators, and internal project teams
  • Review and approve controls deliverables, including
  • Electrical schematic
  • Control panel layout
  • PLC program
  • HMI application
  • Network architecture documentation
  • Troubleshoot complex controls, programming, networking, and integration issues during project execution and startup
  • Support commissioning, operator training, and technology transfer to plant operations teams
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, facilities, operations, IT, electrical, and mechanical engineering groups
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and machine safety requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 7+ years of Controls Engineering experience in a manufacturing or industrial automation environment.

Strong experience with:

  • Rockwell Automation PLC platforms
  • Allen-Bradley PLC programming
  • HMI development
  • SCADA systems

Experience with:

  • FactoryTalk View
  • FactoryTalk Optix
  • Ignition SCADA
  • Knowledge of PID control implementation and process control systems.
  • Experience designing and implementing integrated machine and motion control systems.
  • Ability to work with machine builders and system integrators to deploy manufacturing automation solutions.

Strong understanding of:

  • Electrical panel design
  • Electrical schematics
  • Ladder Logic programming
  • Controls testing and troubleshooting
  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical.

Knowledge of IEC programming standards, including:

  • Ladder Logic
  • Function Block Programming
  • Structured Text
  • Sequential Function Charts

Experience with industrial communication protocols such as:

  • Ethernet/
  • IPEtherCAT
  • Familiarity with machine safety standards, including ISO 13849-1 &
  • Proven ability to work successfully in cross-functional project environments.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting manufacturing automation projects in high-volume production environments.
  • Experience leading controls scope on large capital projects.
  • Motion control and machine integration experience.
  • Strong startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting background.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
