Controls Engineer

Salary: 85K - 115K
Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8AM - 5PM

Medix is partnered with a contract packaging organization (CPO) based in Grand Rapids, Michigan that specializes in supporting companies across the pharma, medical device, and consumer health industries. Rather than manufacturing products, this organization focuses on delivering scalable packaging solutions, including primary and secondary packaging such as bottling, blistering, kitting, and labeling. They operate within highly regulated environments, maintaining strict cGMP compliance while supporting high-volume, fast-turnaround production demands.

As a Controls Engineer, you’ll play a central role in driving automation excellence—designing, optimizing, and supporting the systems that power critical pharmaceutical packaging operations. Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain PLC, HMI, and control system programs for packaging and processing equipment
- Support new equipment installations, startups, and product launches, including control system integration
- Troubleshoot and resolve electrical and controls-related issues on production equipment in a timely manner
- Partner with Engineering and Operations teams to improve equipment performance, efficiency, and reliability
- Assist with equipment qualification activities, including IQ/OQ/PQ protocols
- Develop and maintain electrical schematics, control narratives, and system documentation
- Provide technical support and training to maintenance and production personnel on control systems
- Collaborate with external vendors and system integrators to design and implement automation solutions
- Monitor system performance and drive continuous improvement initiatives related to controls and automation
- Ensure compliance with internal policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
- Support data collection and integration with plant systems, including ERP or reporting tools where applicable
- Maintain backups and version control for all control programs and related documentation
- Perform additional duties as needed to support efficient operations
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3+ years of experience in industrial automation or controls engineering, ideally within manufacturing or packaging
- Hands-on experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms)
- Familiarity with vision systems, motion control, and robotics is a plus
