The Wilson County Health Department is seeking a qualified and dedicated Registered Nurse to serve full-time in our School-Based Health Centers. This role focuses on promoting the health, safety, and well-being of students and school staff within Wilson County Schools.

Description of Work:

This is beginning-level professional nursing work providing primary, preventive, and rehabilitative care in a public health setting. This role is ideal for a nurse who enjoys working with children, collaborating with community partners, and promoting wellness in a school environment.

The nurse will deliver hands-on patient care, support health education, and serve as a key resource for students, families, and school staff. This position also plays an important role in identifying health needs, reducing barriers to care, and improving overall community health outcomes.

I. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

Variety and Scope – Work is performed in school-based clinics and similar settings. Responsibilities include assessing patient needs, providing nursing care based on established protocols, explaining provider recommendations, and helping students and families overcome barriers to care. May include oversight of support staff.

Intricacy – Applies nursing knowledge, patient input, and provider guidance to deliver appropriate care and coordinate referrals when needed.

Subject Matter Complexity – Requires understanding of public health concepts, nursing practices, and student-focused care.

Guidelines – Work is guided by the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act, public health standards, and clinic protocols, requiring sound professional judgment with access to consultation as needed.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:

Nature of Instructions – Work is typically performed within an assigned school clinic setting with general guidance from a supervising nurse. Nurses are trusted to make appropriate adjustments to care plans within established guidelines.

Nature of Review – Work is reviewed regularly through documentation, reports, and consultation to ensure quality care and adherence to standards.

Minimum Education and Experience:Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing
  • BSN (with Public Health Nursing rotation), or Master’s in Public Health, or
  • Associate degree in nursing with at least one year of experience, or equivalent combination

Individuals without a BSN that includes a Public Health Nursing rotation or a Master’s in Public Health will be required to complete the required public health nursing course within one year of employment.
