Job Title: Construction Superintendent
Job Description
The Construction Superintendent oversees day-to-day field operations for a large, multi-phase park and shoreline reconstruction project in Buffalo, NY, with future vertical construction anticipated. This role serves as a key on-site leader responsible for coordinating subcontractors, enforcing safety standards, managing schedules and logistics, and ensuring high-quality work is delivered on time and within budget. The position requires a strong technical experience in commercial, ground-up construction and the ability to mentor field staff, support preconstruction efforts, and partner closely with project stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Direct day-to-day coordination of trade contractors and subcontractors to ensure high-quality work aligned with the approved project schedule.
- Manage the project budget for general conditions and site services, monitoring costs and supporting cost control efforts.
- Develop, document, and communicate work plans related to field changes to keep all stakeholders informed and aligned.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of contract documents to proactively identify, communicate, and mitigate project risks.
- Obtain or verify that subcontractors secure all required construction permits before work begins.
- Serve as the primary safety representative in the field, enforcing safety compliance across all trades and activities.
- Develop and implement safety strategies that promote a strong safety culture and an incident- and injury-free mindset among all project personnel.
- Plan and execute workarounds, shutdowns, and tie-ins to minimize disruption and maintain project continuity.
- Build credibility and strong working relationships with owners, trade contractors, unions, and project partners through fairness, transparency, and integrity.
- Resolve jurisdictional disputes in coordination with sr. leadership such as a Sr. General Superintendent or Construction Executive.
- Lead regular contractor coordination meetings to review progress, resolve issues, and align on upcoming work.
- Maintain detailed daily reports and project documentation using construction software tools and Microsoft Office.
- Create, manage, and regularly update the project schedule, including development of contingency plans to address potential delays.
- Communicate schedule status, updates, and changes to project teams, trade partners, and stakeholders in a clear and timely manner.
- Plan, coordinate, and manage jobsite logistics, including site access, material handling, and sequencing of trades.
- Train and mentor Field Engineers and Superintendents on project needs, construction methodology, safety, and business acumen.
- Support development, preplanning, and preconstruction efforts, including scope definition, constructability input, and participation in buyout activities.
- Administer and track Time and Materials (T&M) work to ensure accurate documentation and billing.
- Lead stretch-and-flex planning, daily huddles, and pre-task planning activities to promote safety, productivity, and clear communication.
- Engage with the local community to foster and grow relationships that support the project and the company’s presence in the market.
- Collaborate closely with business development to align project execution with sales strategies, performance metrics, pursuits, and client deliverables.
- Participate in sales processes, interviews, and presentations as needed to support future work opportunities.

- Strong technical construction skills with the ability to understand and manage all phases of commercial, ground-up work on large-scale projects.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information to owners, subcontractors, field staff, and project partners.
- Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, trades, and priorities in a fast-paced field environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing needs and conditions on the jobsite.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and industry-standard construction software tools for documentation, reporting, and scheduling.
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from construction documents and drawings, with strong construction-document and drawing literacy.
- Experience and proficiency across all divisions of work, including methods, materials, scheduling, and cost control.
- Familiarity with Pull Planning processes and collaborative scheduling methods.
- Deep knowledge and appreciation of construction safety processes, with the ability to enforce a comprehensive project safety plan.
- Proven ability to create and maintain an environment where safety is the top priority and all trades work with an incident- and injury-free attitude.
- Experience supervising a project team in a field leadership role.
- Subcontractor management experience in a commercial construction environment.
- Experience working with or for a general contractor on ground-up commercial projects.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with multiple stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management.
- 8–10 years of experience managing or supervising ground-up construction projects of approximately $20M or larger.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- Experience on commercial construction projects with a general contractor.
- Experience in ground-up construction, with exposure to both civil and vertical work considered beneficial.
- Ability to participate in and support sales processes, client interviews, and presentations as a project representative.
- Strong business acumen related to project performance, client satisfaction, and alignment with business development goals.
Work Environment
This role is based full-time on the jobsite in Buffalo, NY, on a major park and shoreline reconstruction project with additional vertical construction anticipated in future phases. The Construction Superintendent works on site every day in an active construction environment, coordinating multiple trades and subcontractors in the field. The position involves regular use of Microsoft Office and industry-standard construction software for scheduling, reporting, and documentation. Work is primarily performed outdoors and in partially completed structures, with exposure to varying weather conditions, construction noise, and typical jobsite activity. The role requires consistent adherence to and enforcement of strict safety protocols, including use of appropriate personal protective equipment. The schedule follows standard construction hours, with flexibility required to address project needs, critical milestones, and occasional extended hours during key phases of the work. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Buffalo, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $48.00 - $64.00/hr.
