Job Title: Staff Accountant

Job Description

We are seeking a hands-on Staff Accountant with construction accounting experience to support day-to-day accounting, job costing, and billing in a fast-paced, small-company environment. This role works heavily in QuickBooks Desktop and partners with internal teams and external accountants.

Responsibilities

Project Accounting & Job Costing

  • Track and report construction job costs and backlog
  • Maintain job cost data, retainage, and equipment costing
  • Support month-end and year-end close

Accounts Payable (Subcontractors & Vendors)

  • Process invoices and manage vendor relationships
  • Maintain compliance documentation (W-9s, COIs, lien waivers, warranties)

Accounts Receivable & Contract Billing

  • Prepare and reconcile monthly contract billing ($10–15M revenue)
  • Issue client invoices and follow up on collections
  • Maintain labor billing rates and intercompany billing entries

Payroll & Labor Compliance

  • Assist with certified payroll and OCIP reporting (10–20 employees)
  • Prepare payroll and labor reports by class code
  • Maintain knowledge of union wages and benefits

Insurance, Compliance & Reporting

  • Support insurance renewals, audits, and credit applications
  • Manage compliance reporting, prequalification, and ISN/Highwire submissions

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in reconciliation, QuickBooks Desktop, and job costing.
  • Experience with contract billing and cash flow management.
  • Knowledge of accounts payable and receivable processes.
  • Familiarity with certified payroll and union benefits.
  • Ability to handle month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Associate's degree in Accounting or related field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • General ledger experience.
  • Understanding of union payroll and benefits.

Work Environment

The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm, onsite with no hybrid flexibility. The office is located in an old house, providing a close, family-owned company feel. The role involves overseeing and supporting an existing team member and collaborating with the certified payroll team. The environment requires quick adaptation as priorities may shift, emphasizing the need for flexibility in a small company setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Woodbridge, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.65 - $40.87/hr.
