A critical component of the business is the Equipment Division, which operates as an internal equipment rental company supporting field operations. This division plays a direct role in project execution, cost control, and overall operational success. Around 100 employees in the equipment division are responsible for providing safe, reliable, and high-utilization equipment for field teams in Atlanta (HQ), Macon, Savannah, and Jacksonville.


POSITION OBJECTIVE

C.W. Matthews is seeking a Construction Equipment Fleet Manager to join their Equipment Division in Marietta, GA.

This leader will partner closely with the VP of Equipment to oversee fleet strategy, operations, and team leadership, while gradually taking ownership of key aspects of the division.

The scope of the role is significant, overseeing:

  • 1,100 pieces of mobile construction equipment
  • 1,100 vehicles
  • Leadership over 100 staff

This is a strategic leadership role built as part of a long-term succession plan, designed to develop the next leader of the Equipment Division.


POSITION KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fleet Strategy & Asset Management

  • Support and eventually lead equipment purchasing and disposal decisions
  • Develop and manage annual fleet budgets
  • Optimize equipment lifecycle strategy (buy/sell timing)
  • Monitor and improve fleet utilization rates

Operations Oversight

  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained, repaired, and deployed
  • Support field operations by delivering reliable, ready-to-use equipment

People Leadership

  • Help lead a team of ~100 employees (primarily hourly workforce)
  • Set the tone for culture, accountability, and performance

Vendor & Stakeholder Management

  • Manage relationships with 12 key equipment vendors and dealers
  • Negotiate and coordinate equipment purchases and service support

Safety & Risk Management

  • Support and uphold safety standards across all equipment operations
  • Contribute to a culture of safety in a high-risk environment

Financial & Business Oversight

  • Support P&L management and financial decision-making
  • Understand impact of operational decisions on financial performance


SKILLS & EXPERIENCE NEEDED

  • Bachelor’s degree in business highly preferred
  • Equipment rental company or dealer experience preferred
  • Exposure to fleet lifecycle management and vendor/dealer relationships required
  • 5+ years of people leadership experience required (leading large hourly teams preferred)
  • Heavy equipment / fleet experience required
  • People-first leader with strong ownership mindset; communicates effectively and builds trust across teams
  • Highly organized and decisive operator who can balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution while fitting seamlessly into the culture
  • Comfortable traveling 4–6 days per month
