About this OpportunityProvides technical services to assure that buildings constructed in the City are safe for occupation, in compliance with the municipal ordinances and other relevant laws.
The City of Cedar Rapids does not offer sponsorship for employment authorization.Job Duties and Responsibilities- Inspects construction for code compliance.
- Assists in the inspection of residential and commercial construction for building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical code compliance.
- Examines and reviews building plans, blueprints and permit applications.
- Supports and assists permit review and issuance.
- Supports and assists zoning inspection activities.
- Supports and assists zoning enforcement, rental housing and nuisance staff activities and inspections.
- Reviews and interprets building and trade codes which regulates the alteration, and construction of, building and building systems as well as related codes, ordinances, and laws; collaborates with inspectors engaged in enforcement of same.
- Investigates special problems, technical data or other matters relating to building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical inspections, files oral or written reports on same; communicates with contractors and the general public, orally or in writing; Confers with architects.
- Maintains manual and electronic inspection records.
- Prepares materials for legal action as necessary to obtain compliance with plumbing codes.
- Maintains records and replies to correspondence; Attends staff meetings.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices.
- Attends work regularly at the designated place and time; Supports continuous process improvement initiatives;
- Performs related work as required.
Acceptable Training and Experience- Graduation from High School or GED; and
- One years continuous service as an inspector for a county or municipality.
Required Special Qualifications- ICC Residential Inspector certifications in B1, M1, E1 and P1.
- One Commercial inspection qualification either B2, M2, E2 or P2.
- Valid Iowa Drivers License
- Must have one years’ experience in Residential or Commercial Building, Mechanical, Electrical or Plumbing inspections for a jurisdiction.
Work Schedule- Monday through Friday 7:30am - 4:30pm
Hourly Rate
The Combination Inspector position is covered under the AFSCME Bargaining Union, and all new hires begin employment at $31.88 per hour, regardless of years of experience. Employees in this classification receive a step increase on their anniversary. The steps effective 7/1/2025 include:
