Who we are. At Mercer Mass Timber we are exceptional people making mass timber for a more sustainable world. We are North America’s largest Mass Timber Manufacturer, with facilities in Penticton, British Columbia, Spokane Valley, Washington, and Conway, Arkansas with a combined annual production capacity of over 255,000 cubic metres of mass timber. MMT is part of Mercer International, a leading forest products company who is one of the world’s largest market pulp producers and operates the world’s largest sawmill. Mercer has operations in Canada, Germany, and the United States.
Reporting to the Master Planner, the CNC Programmer is responsible for translating architectural and structural drawings into precise, efficient machine code for the fabrication of mass timber components, including Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glued-Laminated Timber (Glulam). This role requires in-depth experience with Hundegger CAMBIUM software and a strong working knowledge of the Hundegger K2, PBA, and UFA machine platforms to ensure optimal production output, quality, and material yield.
Responsibilities
- Create, edit, and optimize machine programs (e.g., Cambium) directly from 3D CAD/CAM models for all structural timber components.
- Develop high-efficiency programs specifically for Hundegger K2, PBA, and UFA units, maximizing the unique capabilities and throughput of each machine.
- Select appropriate tooling, cutting speeds, and feed rates to achieve precise tolerances and surface finishes across various products, such as CLT and Glulam.
- Implement advanced nesting and cutting strategies to minimize waste and maximize material yield, directly impacting production cost-efficiency.
- Use simulation software and machine controls to rigorously test programs, ensuring accurate geometry and preventing machine collisions.
- Collaborate with operators and QC personnel to inspect the first part of new production runs, making necessary adjustments before full-scale manufacturing.
- Diagnose and resolve programming-related issues, including dimensional discrepancies and tool-wear compensation, in coordination with maintenance teams.
- Organize and maintain a clean, version-controlled library of all CNC programs, setup sheets, and related technical documentation.
- Proactively seek out and implement enhancements to programming techniques and manufacturing processes to boost productivity.
- Partner with design, engineering, and project management teams to ensure fabrication requirements and timelines are consistently met.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a CNC Programmer, preferably within the wood processing, heavy timber, or mass timber manufacturing industry.
- Demonstrated proficiency in programming and operating Hundegger CNC machines, specifically the K2, PBA, and UFA models.
- Expert knowledge of the Hundegger CAMBIUM software suite.
- Strong background in 3D CAD/CAM software relevant to timber fabrication (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, hsbCAD, Mitek, or similar).
- Deep understanding of mass timber products (CLT, Glulam) and timber-specific machining processes (joinery, routing, drilling, end-face machining, formatting).
- Ability to read and interpret complex architectural drawings, structural engineering models, and bill of materials (BOMs).
Salary and Benefits
- The salary for this position is $65,000 - $70,000. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
- Our group benefits package, which has no waiting period, includes extended health and dental benefits.
- 401(k) retirement savings plan.
