Job Title: CNC Swiss Machinist

Job Description

This role focuses on setting up, operating, and optimizing CNC Swiss-style machines to produce precision components within tight tolerances. You will take ownership of the full machining process, from program edits and tooling setup to in‑process inspection and collaboration with cross-functional teams, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality production.

Responsibilities

  • Set up production jobs on CNC Swiss-style machines and edit, adjust, upload, and download CNC programs as required.
  • Determine tooling requirements for each job, create detailed tool lists, and submit tooling order requests to the purchasing department.
  • Operate multiple CNC machines throughout the shift while consistently producing parts within specified tolerances and quality standards.
  • Request and verify job packets, materials, and gauges for new setups to ensure all required resources are available and correct.
  • Perform thorough in‑process and final inspections using a variety of inspection and measuring equipment to verify part conformance.
  • Make offset adjustments as needed to maintain part quality and dimensional accuracy.
  • Sharpen, change, and adjust tooling to sustain optimal cutting conditions and extend tool life.
  • Maintain proper machine fluid levels and ensure machines are running efficiently and safely.
  • Set up and adjust bar feeders based on material size and part length to support continuous production.
  • Load and operate bar feeders, measure bar stock, and verify that the correct material is used per blueprints and job specifications.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of various materials and their properties when planning setups and machining strategies.
  • Complete required preventive maintenance tasks and maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
  • Communicate machine issues promptly to the maintenance department to minimize downtime and maintain productivity.
  • Collaborate with programmers, operators, supervisors, foremen, and other shifts regarding machine performance, job performance, and process improvements.
  • Set up machines to run at standard rates and notify supervision if standard rates cannot be met, providing feedback on potential issues.
  • Verify and optimize cycle times to meet or exceed routed standards while maintaining quality requirements.
  • Create, update, and revise machine setup sheets as needed to ensure accurate and current documentation for future runs.
  • Perform deburring, stacking, and finishing operations as needed using appropriate hand tools.
  • Follow all manufacturing and production procedures, including inspection and quality control processes, to support consistent output.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience setting up and operating CNC Swiss-style machines such as Citizen, Tornos-Deco, or Star.
  • Proficiency in editing and adjusting CNC programs for Swiss-style machines.
  • Strong ability to set up, set, and offset tooling for CNC Swiss operations.
  • Solid understanding of advanced Swiss CNC operations and machining practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in manufacturing and production environments.
  • Ability to perform inspections using a variety of inspection and measuring equipment.
  • Experience with deburring operations and the use of appropriate hand tools.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude to support precise measurements, offsets, and machining calculations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaborating across shifts and departments.
  • Strong critical-thinking skills to troubleshoot issues, optimize cycle times, and improve processes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with various materials and an understanding of their properties in a machining environment.
  • Familiarity with bar feeder setup, adjustment, loading, and operation for different material sizes and part lengths.
  • Experience in creating, updating, and revising machine setup sheets and related documentation.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance on CNC equipment.
  • Comfort working with stacking and handling parts in a production environment.
  • Ability to follow detailed blueprints, job specifications, and routed standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high quality and tight tolerances.

Work Environment

This position is based in a manufacturing and production facility focused on CNC Swiss-style machining. You will work with multiple CNC machines, bar feeders, and a variety of inspection and measuring equipment, as well as common hand tools used for deburring and finishing. Current openings are on 2nd and 3rd shift, with typical hours of 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. The environment emphasizes safety, preventive maintenance, and cleanliness, with an expectation that work areas remain organized and well maintained throughout the shift.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cary, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $30.00/hr.
