Responsibilities

The Office of Space Weather Observations (SWO) under NESDISis responsible foradvancing space weather observational capabilities to meet NOAA programmatic needs. NOAA’s Space Weather Next (SWX) programmaintainsand extends space weather observations from various vantage points, selected to most efficiently provide comprehensive knowledge of the Sun and the near-Earth space environment needed to protect our technological infrastructure.

The Space Weather Ground Services (SWGS)is responsible forcomprehensive ground services for all SWX projects, ensuring successful implementation and operation ofobservingassets and ensuring the continuity of space weather measurements made by SWFO-L1 and the GOES-R series satellites.

The SWGS Mission Operations Services (MOS) program must provide a fullmission satellitecommand and control solution to support the L1 Series with two new independently launched observatories.

Overview:

Peraton is seeking aCloudSystemsEngineer with a focus on designing,deployingand managingahighly available, scalableAWSinfrastructurefor satelliteCommand & Control (C2) and data processing.The cloud engineer willleveragesoftware to configure,scaleand manage virtual resources in a cloud environment.Thecandidate will focus on developingasecure, scalable cloud infrastructure fora newsatelliteground systemsupporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

This role requires close collaboration with other program functional elements including CyberEngineering, Systems Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT), Software Engineering, Networks, Infrastructure,SystemsArchitects,Operationsand program leadership.

  • Provide technicalexpertisefor thedesignandimplementationof cloud computing techniques and technologies to the program
  • Design, deploy andmaintainscalableandhighly availablecomputing and storage solutions
  • Implement andoptimizecloud-basedarchitectures
  • Optimizeand implementmemory managementidentifyingthe best ways tomaximize performance while controlling costs
  • Supportdata integration and migration efforts, including mapping schemas, and defining domain specific functionality, where applicable
  • Work with team members from a variety ofengineeringspecialties totroubleshoot andsolvetechnicalproblems
  • Support a range of clients from front line analysts to researchers and senior leadership
  • Work as a key contributor on a collaborative, fast-growing, and highly skilledengineering anddevelopment team

Qualifications

  • Minimum of5yearswith BS/BA; Minimum of3yearswith MS/MA
  • 9yearsof relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree
  • Knowledge of Cloud computing technologies and architectures to includeexperience designing and implementingCI/CD Pipelines,DevSecOpsframeworks, applicationcontainerizationand coreAmazon Web Services
  • Strongunderstanding of IP networking, firewalls, and data encryption,particularlywithIAM and secure access to sensitive space assets
  • Understanding how to deploycomputeinstances, manage storage, configure networking,databasesand integratecloudservices
  • Ability to automate tasks and manage workflows using Python,Bashor PowerShell
  • Experience withInfrastructure as Code (IaC) design and implementation to includetools like Terraform, CloudFormation and Ansible
  • AWS Certified Cloud Architector similar cloud certifications
  • Ability to obtain and hold a Public Trust clearance – US Citizenship isrequired

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiencyin Docker and Kubernetes/EKSfor deploying and managing containerizedapplications
  • Experience with implementing and using artificial intelligence and machine learning tools
  • Knowledge of NIST security framework and security controls tomaintaincompliance for Government systems
  • Experience working within a distributed virtual team environment, withproficiencyin remote collaboration tools and practices
  • Experience working on a satellite ground system with understanding ofNOAA and NASA organizations and processes
  • Experience working inScaled Agile Framework (SAFe)environments or similar Agile methodologiesand experience with Jira/ Confluence Atlassian tools
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a willingness to foster strong relationships with coworkers,vendorsandstakeholders
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Active Public Trust Clearance

Target Salary Range

$104,000 - $166,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
