The Harris County Sheriff's Office is seeking qualified applicants for the Support Staff - Clerk position in the Courts Division.
The Clerk's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, data entry, file maintenance, and supporting interactions with the public and law enforcement personnel. Support personnel have access to confidential information. Additionally, under the general supervision of the Courts Division Captain, Lieutenant, and Administrative Sergeant, the Clerk performs duties that include:
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to inquiries from the public, law enforcement agencies, the District Attorney’s Office, the County Attorney’s Office, County and District Court Staff, and members of the Judiciary
- Maintain a filing system of memoranda, letters, documents, and other materials for the Courts Division
- Maintain the tracking and scanning of Jury Meal Vouchers, round sheets, and inspection forms
- Answer the telephones, take messages, provide information, and refer inquiries to the appropriate party
- Type and distribute correspondence
- Data entry and management
- Act in a backup capacity for Payroll and other Admin functions
- Maintain training records
- Correlate, enter, and maintain documents and data in a Microsoft SharePoint database.
- Office Inventory and Supplies
- Maintain a calendar
- Comply with state and federal law, Harris County civil service, departmental, bureau, and division rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures

- High School Diploma or GED
- A minimum of one (1) year of paid work experience in an office environment performing clerical duties
- Pass the pre-employment HCSO Clerical Skills Test with a minimum overall score of 75% and a typing speed of 35 WPM with 85% accuracy.
Skilled In
- Excellent written communication with proper use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
- Effective communication with excellent interpersonal skills
- The use of Superion/RMS, SharePoint, FileOnQ, and JWeb, computer software, and standard office software programs such as Adobe, MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint
- Analytical/critical thinking and problem-solving
- General office methods, procedures, and practices
- Principles of record keeping and records management
- Public relations and customer service
- Reviewing documents and extracting relevant information

- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, outside agencies, court staff, and the general public

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands
This role is sedentary; however, the ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds is necessary to lift files or boxes of files, documents, etc.
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The hours may vary based on the business needs of the department. Ability to work overtime or varying duty hours as deemed necessary.
