The Electric Drive Module (EDM) Chief Engineer has the responsibilities to ensure the eDrive propulsion system components, motors, inverters, EDM, drive line, and controllers are designed and validated to meet program requirements and timing. Provides leadership to product engineering team for given propulsion system components. Delivers balanced, integrated, and validated system to the vehicle team which meets requirements. Coordinates with sub-system teams (motors, inverters, reducer, controls, software, and calibration). Lead all aspects of EDS projects to achieve customer requirements and functional targets, including adaptation, NVH, efficiency, performance, durability, and cost. Provide direction in the architecture and integration of the eDrive systems to meet functional, performance and durability requirements. Manages team of Assistant Chief Engineers, Design System Engineers, and Program Managers.
Responsibilities:
- Single point technical contact for EDM
- Coordinate and approve supplier selection.
- Standardization and planning technical leadership to achieve complexity reduction.
- Ensure industry competitiveness for mass, efficiency, torque, power, NVH, and cost.
- Resolution of technical and commercial issues to meet on time PPAP.
- Establish and lead weekly EDM technical table to drive collaboration and balancing of system and subsystems.
- Ownership and improvement of 3 MIS, 12 MIS, and 36 MIS quality.
- Identify requirements and collect cross-functional department information/data to take technical decisions in the appropriate forum to meet functional objectives within program scope.
- Ensure coherence between the Product technical features and the Sub System Technical Specification and make all final technical decisions for the engine (owner’s and service manual approvals, root cause analysis closure, SSTS approval,…)
- Ensure maximum achievable commonality across all applications within the engine family
- Ensure best practices and lessons learned are used and properly shared across the engine family
- Ensure product readiness to support approved launches defining appropriate timing milestones for the given project and leading the technical change review meetings
- Promote Intellectual property development (patents, NDAs, EBPs, etc. ) as a result of product innovation
- Manage R&D expenses identifying all possible efficiencies vs. approved business case
- Manage Product lifecycle, including Quality Improvement activities
Basic Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Physics, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Computer Engineering, Computer Science from an ABET accredited school or equivalent
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in a related field
- Understanding of System Requirements Engineering required for customer functions within the Electric Drive and Charging Systems fields
- Ability to author system/component level requirements
- Strong interpersonal communication, team/leadership skills/experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in with emphasis in electrical power conversion, electromechanical energy conversion, power electronics, and electrical machines from an ABET accredited school or equivalent.
- Demonstrated working level experience in decomposing intended function into requirements inclusive of many of the following: Electric drive systems, gear train systems, powertrain integration, high voltage electronics, low voltage electronics, motor controls, communication protocols, sensors, and software.
- Working experience in creation and execution of validation plans inclusive of the following: Electric Drive Units, Electric Machines, Inverters, Gears, Auxiliary Power Modules, and On Board Chargers.
- Critical character traits to ensure success: Action Oriented, Dealing with Ambiguity, Customer Focus, Problem Solving.
