The Chief Deputy Clerk 1 (salary range 14) participates in the management and supervision of clerical employees while assisting the Clerk of Court in planning, directing, and monitoring non-judicial operations at the Juneau Trial Courts. Responsibilities include assisting with the development and implementation of training plans for new and tenured staff, coordinating office supply purchases, and ensuring efficient daily operations. The role also serves as acting manager in the absence of the Clerk of Court and helps maintain continuity of court functions.

The position supports trial court management and leadership by assisting with staff supervision, monitoring workflow, responding to staff questions, and addressing inquiries or complaints from the public, attorneys, and other stakeholders. It helps ensure accurate and timely case processing in compliance with court rules, policies, and procedures, while also supporting customer service standards and resolving minor employee issues. The role works closely with the Clerk of Court, judges, HR, and court administration to support personnel processes, performance evaluations, and adherence to administrative policies.

In addition, this position assists in overseeing core court operations, including case flow management, recordkeeping, jury management, in-court procedures, and financial processing such as fines and restitution. It contributes to budgeting, staff meetings, training, and district-wide initiatives aimed at improving court operations. The role also provides backup coverage for clerical functions as needed and takes on special projects and assignments to support the overall effectiveness of the Juneau Trial Court.

The Work Hours

Full-time court employees are currently scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week. The work hours for this position are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND two years of technical or professional legal work experience AND the ability to keyboard at least 40 words per minute (net).

OR

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college AND the ability to keyboard at least 40 words per minute (net).
