Job Summary

The Pharmacy Assistant/Technician provides distributive pharmacy services, assistance, and support under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. This position is responsible for preparing, distributing, and maintaining medications and supplies in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and applicable regulations. The role contributes to safe, efficient, and cost-effective patient care by supporting pharmacy operations.

Essential Functions

  • Procure, prepare, and distribute medications per physician orders, pharmacist requests, or established assignments.
  • Accurately fill physician orders, medication carts, surgical kits, floor stock, and emergency drug containers.
  • Prepare sterile products, including IV admixtures and chemotherapy, using appropriate aseptic technique (if certified and as directed by the Pharmacy Director).
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas in a timely manner.
  • Assist in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and properly storing medications and supplies rotate stock to prevent waste.
  • Repackage bulk medications into unit doses per established policies and procedures.
  • Enter medication orders, charges, and credits into the pharmacy computer system accurately.
  • Maintain required documentation, records, logs, and reports.
  • Assist in quality assurance and inspection activities, including identifying and removing outdated or unusable medications.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe pharmacy work areas.
  • Answer phones courteously, direct inquiries appropriately, and provide support to staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and competency assessments as required.
  • Support onboarding and orientation of new staff.
  • Adhere to hospital and departmental policies regarding patient confidentiality, HIPAA, infection control, medication safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent including education equivalent to completion of secondary school or demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the role. (Preferred)
  • High School Student Enrollment in an accredited high school or dual-enrollment program with demonstrated progress toward completion. Candidates must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire. (required) And
  • Completion of a pharmacy technician training program (preferred)

Licenses/Certifications

  • LPT - Licensed Pharmacy Tech Registration or licensure as a Pharmacy Technician with the applicable State board of Pharmacy required, where mandated by state law. Upon Hire (required)

Experience

  • Zero to 1 year experience in a healthcare of pharmacy setting (preferred)
