Description:Position summary:
This position is a career ladder position for technical staff within the Department of Pharmacy. It is intended to recognize the associate’s development, experience and service to the department, hospital and co-workers. The primary differences between a pharmacy technician II and a pharmacy technician III are; 1) completion of department cost savings or process improvement project, 2) assume the role of a lead for one of the pharmacy competency areas to other staff and 3) the length of service to the department/organization. Adheres to MercyOne performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MercyOne.
Shift: Rotating 8-hours shifts
What you will do:
Responsible for unit dose medication distribution and control.
- Fills unit dose carts for daily exchanges.
- Exchange unit dose carts.
- Refills requests for floor stock replacements as necessary.
- Delivers medications to patient areas and restocks unit dose bins after cart filling.
- Processes and delivers Emergency medications.
- Monitors drug stock levels and communicates with pharmacy purchasing personnel to ensure supplies are ordered in a timely manner
Central operations
- Basic billing procedures (credit/debit)
- Monitors drug storage areas for product expiration dating.
- Basic Inventory Management
- HEMM product ordering
- Workflow prioritization
Demonstrates competence with automated dispensing units
- Restock dispensing unit from generated refill list
- Can provide basic trouble shooting help and resolution of problems with dispensing units
- Properly informs appropriate pharmacy personnel responsible for dispensing units if any issues or concerns arise.
Assists pharmacists in preparing and dispensing compounded sterile products
- Prepares IV admixtures correctly from labels or by verbal pharmacist orders
- Prepares IV admixtures according to USP 797 guidelines and aseptic technique.
- Completes chemotherapy training and all associated competencies.
- Prepares chemotherapy products as required.
Contributes to the safe and efficient operation of the Pharmacy Department.
- Takes initiative in doing miscellaneous functions within the department.
- Maintains responsible length of time for breaks as defined in the Associate Handbook.
- Demonstrates an attitude regarding telephone usage as outlined in the Associate Handbook.
- Volunteers for projects and willingly assists co-workers to complete daily responsibilities.
- Works as a team player and assists where needed.
Completes one department quality assurance/improvement project every six months
- Project must provide one of the following: a cost savings initiative, increased patient safety or introducing a best practice to the department.
- Ability to work with pharmacists, pharmacy residents and pharmacy students to complete the process improvement as required.
- Ability to manage time and complete tasks on time is required.
Ability to serve as a mentor and or "lead" on one of the advanced competency areas identified by the Pharmacy Department.
- This may include but is not limited to; Checking Tech in a Tech-Check-Tech program, medication reconciliation program, IT / Automation program
- USP 797 Standard for I.V. room, 340 B purchasing/reimbursement and technology lead.
Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
- High School plus specialized training: CPhT Training. Associate Degree preferred.
- CPhT required.
- Registered with Iowa Board of Pharmacy.
- 1 year as a pharmacy technician II at a MercyOne Hospital
