Duties and Responsibilities:


Under the general direction of the Kapa?akea Principal Investigators, the SLS 302 Instructor will provide the following:

  • Teach SLS 302 Second Language Learning to Native Hawaiian students in the NHSS sheltered summer institute program.
  • Incorporate traditional Hawaiian knowledge and texts into the curriculum.
  • Other related tasks and/or duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Masters degree in Linguistics, Second Language Studies, Hawaiian Studies, Language, Political Science, Education, Ethnic Studies, or closely related field
    • Teaching experience in college level courses
    • Experience in the field of Native Hawaiian or indigenous education
    • Demonstrated ability to present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing and verbally


Desired Qualifications:


  • PhD in Linguistics, Second Language Studies, Education or closely related field
  • Evidence of ability to teach effectively
  • Ability to teach Second Language Studies while teaching toward the learning outcomes of SLS 302 at UH Manoa
  • Familiarity with a range of perspectives and experiences of Native Hawaiian students in the social sciences
  • Familiarity with institutional barriers for Native Hawaiian students in higher education and best practices for Native Hawaiian student success
