This Carpentry Instructor position is responsible for providing competency-based training to students in a manner that prepares successful program graduates for entry-level employment in the carpentry industry.
This is a 214/7 non-tenure track faculty position.Essential Functions - Use effective competency-based teaching techniques, instructional materials, and appropriate media support to conduct classroom lectures, coursework, and laboratory projects and prepare students with the practical skills essential for entry-level professional employment.
- Provide individualized instruction.
- Mentor, encourage, counsel, and guide students toward completing program requirements, i.e., course assignments, interpersonal relationships, career goals, and responsible work habits.
- Facilitate a process for ongoing student input for instructional and program improvement.
- Develop and maintain complete program curriculum documentation per the approved college format and ensure that instruction is consistent with current industry or business standards, technologies, procedures, equipment, and materials.
- Plan and develop meaningful student learning experiences based on current industry or business practices.
- Ensure that the training program requires the use of library or online resources and that students acquire the ability to access and use these resources.
- Annually validate and review course competencies and skills required for industry entry-level employment in the industry or profession and adapt the curriculum to match those skills when needed.
- Respond appropriately to student problems and assist in solving them per college procedures.
- Manage the classroom in a manner that ensures a suitable learning environment.
- Ensure that appropriate safety practices are always used, students know safety techniques, and all equipment is maintained in a safe working condition.
- Assist in planning and developing annual departmental budgets. Requisition, control, and safeguard inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program.
- Evaluate and document students' competency attainment, course progress, attendance, work-based learning experiences, and workplace behaviors at least quarterly and per college policy and procedures.
- Maintain required written and computerized records and respond to requests for information promptly.
- Maintain records of all "shop job" instructional projects.
- Develop and maintain industry-based program accreditation and ensure students are prepared for and have the opportunity to obtain relevant industry credentials and certifications.
- Provide classroom management to maintain a suitable learning environment by responding appropriately to student conduct and problems and assisting in solving them per college procedures.
- Provide budget management, including requisition and maintenance control and safeguarding inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program.
- Actively contribute to and participate in college-wide activities supporting regional accreditation and state and federal requirements.
- Support College student achievement practices to ensure student retention, completion, and progression.
- Participate actively and collaboratively with College Student Services and program advisory committees to support students' access to employment opportunities and maintain student job placement records.
- Participate actively and collaboratively in student recruitment.
Non-Essential/Other Functions - Actively contribute to and participate in college-wide activities supporting regional accreditation and state and federal requirements.
- Support College student achievement practices to ensure student retention, completion, and progression.
- Participate actively and collaboratively with College Student Services and program advisory committees to support students' access to employment opportunities and maintain student job placement records.
- Actively contribute to and participate in college-wide activities supporting regional accreditation and state and federal requirements.
- Accountable for keeping personal development up-to-date; adding skills and knowledge through courses that may be available through the Bates Technical College courses, professional development committees, etc.
- Participate actively and collaboratively on college committees as needed, including, but not limited to, staff recruitment, college councils, etc.

- This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by Bates Technical College local union.
- Following the date of hire, all full-time faculty and all part-time faculty working two-thirds of a full-time load for more than three quarters (20 hours per week) must obtain a Professional-Technical Education Certificate within 30 working days.
- Maintain all applicable certifications for essential parts of the position (e.g., relevant carpentry certifications and first aid/CPR certification).
- Maintain Accreditation standards according to WAC standards
- Licenses (e.g., Valid Washington State Driver’s License and reliable vehicle for reimbursable travel)
Minimum Qualifications- Two (2) years of recent work experience as a carpentry educator, journeyman carpenter, lead carpenter, general contractor, or superintendent/supervisor.
Allowable SubstitutionIf necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by Human Resources for comparability.
Preferred Qualifications - Supervisory experience.
- Commercial carpentry experience.
- Experience working with persons of disability and learning-disabled persons.
- Prior teaching in a vocational setting.
