The Care Attendant provides limited patient care support, and observation services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and may be directed by the nurse or physician, to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is always maintained. Must routinely perform the UPMC core responsibilities for Care Attendants: Maintains a safe patient environment, including safety checks, keeping patient rooms clean. Interacts and attends to patients and families on regular basis. Provides fall prevention, observation, bed making, ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning/repositioning). Assists with I&O, weights. Skilled at constant observation and psychiatric observation competencies.
Patient Care & Observation
- Provides observation and direct patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse (RN).
- Assists patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, transporting, and turning/repositioning.
- Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail when not providing direct patient care.
- Provides one-on-one companionship and supervision for patients, as assigned.
- Responds to emergent situations within the scope of the Care Attendant role.
- Reports changes in patient condition and provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care.
Safety, Environment & Infection Control
- Maintains a safe, clean, and organized patient care environment conducive to patient recovery.
- Completes safety checks and supports workplace safety for patients and self.
- Cleans patient rooms and patient-specific equipment, changes bed linens, and empties linen hampers.
- Reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.
- Complies with safety policies and procedures, including Standard Precautions and bloodborne pathogen exposure protocols.
- Strictly adheres to all policies related to patient care and hospital/confidential information.
Equipment, Supplies & Unit Support
- Acquires, distributes, and stocks supplies and equipment to support patient care delivery.
- Performs messenger functions and assists with ordering and charging/crediting supplies.
- Sets up patient care equipment within the scope of the Care Attendant role.
- Stocks patient rooms and unit supply areas as needed.
Communication & Team Collaboration
- Communicates clearly, professionally, and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
- Establishes appropriate, effective communication strategies and respectful interpersonal relationships.
- Demonstrates understanding of cultural diversity, workplace impairment, and horizontal violence.
- Supports universal patient care activities, including answering telephones, assisting with meal trays, and accompanying patients during transport.
- Develops and maintains productive working relationships by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.

- Completes clerical and administrative functions as needed by the department.

If no previous patient care training, successful completion of UPMC care attendant(sitter) training program Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Work permit required if under 18 years of age.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
