This is anopenexamination. To be eligible for this examination applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or have a permanent residence card. Applicants must possess at least an Associate's Degree, and be at least 18 years of age.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
· Serves as an entry-level GIS technician who specializes in spatial technology and supports the department by maintaining GIS databases and departmental records
· Performs duties in the office and in the field including but not limited to: reading and interpreting maps and engineering drawings; GIS data entry and data maintenance; producing maps and processing data to serve a variety of purposes; utilizing and maintaining a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS); and field locating assets
· Utilizes current GIS software and asset management software
· Performs related work as required
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
· Entry-level GIS Technician
· Applies GIS principles and techniques to work performed in the office and field as outlined in the General Statements of Duties
· Utilizes skills for data management, field data collection, and respond to GIS related requests
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
· Produces maps, manipulates data and assists with GIS applications to meet departmental, project, program and/or public needs
· Creates, compiles, converts and transfers data and existing records from a variety of sources using industry-standard software tools
· Performs assignments related to the collection, QA/QC, maintenance and analysis of information including GIS and CMMS databases
· Builds and maintains topology and geometric/utility networks
· Utilizes problem-solving skills and consults with the GIS team to analyze data and determine the best course of action to accomplish tasks
· Reviews and analyzes existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness and develops written and/or verbal recommendations for continuous improvement
· May assist with the public-facing departmental website
· May represent the department at planning, pre-construction, utility coordination, and other meetings. Performs routine mathematical computations
· Utilizes technology and software as required by the department
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
· Demonstrates sufficient technical aptitude of the principles and practices of GIS as they relate to public works and infrastructure
· Understands the differences between various data types
· Understands the importance of projection, coordinate systems, and spatial accuracy in GIS
· Knowledge and use of a satellite-based navigation system is a plus (such as a GPS unit)
· Demonstrates relevant experience in geographical information systems and computer technology or cartography principles are required
· Demonstrates experience with current GIS software
· Willingness and aptitude for GIS work
· Ability to perform duties with attention to detail and accuracy
· Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including computers, scanners, plotters, printers, mobile devices, and copiers
· Ability to perform repetitious work independently with minimal supervision
· Physical ability required for walking, bending, stooping, and data entry both in the field, during all types of weather, and in the office
· Ability to be well-organized, and accurately follow adopted policies and procedures
· Willingness to continuously learn new technical skills, workflows, and contribute to a team atmosphere
· Demonstrates advanced computer skills, reading and interpretation of engineering plans, maps and data are expected
· Ability to carry out oral and written instructions with minimum of detail
· Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
· Ability to utilize tabular databases
· Must possess a valid State of Ohio Driver's License at all times
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
· Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in Geographic Information Systems; Geography; Cartography; Computer Science; or equivalent
- A Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems; Geography; Cartography; Computer Science; or equivalent is preferred
- Any equivalent combination of knowledge, training, and experience which provides the necessary skills and abilities may be acceptable
· A minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience preferred
· Must be able to demonstrate experience with GIS software (i.e. ESRI products)
· Must have experience with spreadsheet and word processing software and products
· Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license at all times
· Must pass a technical aptitude test issued by the City of Canton

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VETERANS

A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member’s initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
