This is a closed promotional examination limited to employees in the classification of Police Officer with the City of Canton, OhioPolice Department.

To be eligible for the examination, candidates must have completed at least five (5) years of service as a Canton Police Officer on or before November 3, 2026.

A Police Sergeant shall be responsible for the efficient operation of his assignment in conformity with established procedures and policies of the Police Department. The individual shall exercise authority commensurate with his responsibility and be accountable to an assigned supervisor. All legitimate orders shall be obeyed and submitted promptly insuring uniform interpretation and full compliance.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF CLASS:
Duty hours shall be established by the assignment but the individual shall be available at all times and in cases of special need or emergency. The individual shall familiarize themselves with the administrative policy of the department and diligently execute the programs and service programs within their area of responsibility. The individual shall exercise the general supervision and inspection of all personnel and of all public places within their assignment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
The individual areas of responsibility are, but not limited to, prevention and suppression of crimes, protection of life and property, apprehension and prosecution of offenders, preservation of peace, enforcement of regulatory measures, and supervision of subordinates.

REOUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of supervision, administration, operations, legal terminology, procedures and related matters necessary to manage the Canton Police Division in an effective and efficient manner. A comprehensive knowledge of Federal, State, and City Laws as they pertain to local enforcement is required. The individual must have the ability to prepare technical reports and to develop good working relationships with others. The individual shall have a valid driver's license. The individual must pass a competitive promotional examination. Promotion shall be by successive ranks so far as practicable and the individual must have served at least five (5) years in the next practicable lower rank.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
An educational background with a high school degree or equivalent is required. Course work including criminology and law leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree is highly desirable. A thorough background in the City of Canton law enforcement department performing the official duties as an officer of that department.THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL TEST. IT IS ONLY OPEN TO CANTON CITY POLICE OFFICERS HAVING SERVED AT LEAST FIVE YEARS IN THE DEPARTMENT.

This examination will consist of three parts: a written exam, which will be weighted at 30%, an oral assessment (panel interview), which will be weighted at 20%, an assessment center, which will be weighted at 50%. The toptwelvecandidates from the written exam will advance to the oral assessment and the assessment center provided a minimum passing score of 65% is achieved on the written exam. (any ties for the twelfth spot will be broken by seniority). Credit will be given for seniority after the three examinations are weighted in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code and the Rules and Regulations of the Canton Civil Service Commission, provided a minimum overall score of 70% is attained.

The written examination will be held November 3, 2026 at 1:00 pm.Check in will begin at 12:30 pm. Applicants will be admitted to the test site only upon presentation of their valid State of Ohio Driver's License or other valid photo identification card to the examiners. The location of the examination will be determined at a later date. This exam will take approximately 2 hours to complete.

The oral assessment will be a panel interview, during which each candidate will be asked a series of prepared questions designed to measure performance dimensions based on the expectations of the position. The oral assessment will be held November 16th and 17th, 2026. The location and time will be announced at a later date.

The assessment center will be a structured series of activities or exercises. These exercises are developed to enable individuals trained as assessors to observe a candidate's behavior and document a score based on the candidate's performance. The assessment center will be heldNovember 21st and 22nd, 2026. The location and time will be assigned at a later date.

SENIORITY
Credit will be given for seniority in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code and the Canton Civil Service Commission Rules and Regulations provided a passing score is attained on the exam components.
