The Certified Tumor Registrar performs case finding, abstracting, and quality control of all reportable neoplasms, according to local, state, and national guidelines. Completes abstracts (case summaries) that are submitted to the California Cancer Registry and National Cancer Data Base. Assists with compliance of all requirements of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Commission on Cancer (CoC), California State Cancer Registry and national level reporting agencies as required.
Essential Functions:
Identify reportable neoplasms. Review and abstract information from patient medical records (including outside records) including demographic characteristics, history of neoplasm/injury, diagnostic procedures, final diagnosis, stage, extent of disease and treatment.
Code and enter into the database: topography, morphology, treatment, stage and other required information in compliance with standards set by the American College of Surgeons, the Washington Cancer Registry, National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) and departmental standards.
Obtain on-going follow up information to include medical status from patient medical records, letters or phone calls to provide end results information. Perform clerical functions of follow up as needed.
Organize, enter and maintain patient computer data to ensure conformance to tumor registry operational standards and to meet the needs of the users of registry data. Coordinate/collaborate with physicians to support research and information.
Participate in educational, community outreach and other activities of the Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Cancer Program to facilitate compliance with accrediting agencies and facility requirements.
Facilitates, prepares, and distributes cancer conference and cancer committee conference notices to hospital departments and physicians as required. Assist in the preparation/distribution of material for Cancer Center programs and events.

Education and Experience:
High School Graduate - upon hire and/or 2+ years of cancer registry experience in a team-oriented collaborative environment required or;
High School GED - upon hire and/or 2+ years of cancer registry experience in a team-oriented collaborative environment required and
Preferred:
Abstracting experience within CoC facilities and
Experience with cancer registry software or electronic record-keeping systems.
Licensure and Certifications:
Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) - upon hire required.
